The Penn State Nittany Lions and Rutgers Scarlet Knights put their undefeated records on the line Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium.
The Penn State Nittany Lions now have something to play for after the NCAA recently lifted their postseason ban. As if that wasn’t scary enough for their opponents, quarterback Christian Hackenberg is completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 773 yards, giving Penn State the fifth-best passing offense in the country. Three different Penn State receivers have topped 100 yards, including Geno Lewis who has racked up 271 yards on just 14 catches. The one area that James Franklin would like to see the Nittany Lions offense improve is a running game that’s averaging 2.8 yards per carry. Defensively, the Penn State Nittany Lions are allowing 261.5 yards per game and 4.3 yards per play. Mike Hull leads Penn State with 22 tackles and Anthony Zettel already has four tackles for loss.
This is a big matchup for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights given the fact its their first conference matchup as a Big Ten team. Rutgers has an experienced quarterback in Gary Nova, who’s completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 563 yards and six touchdowns. Nova has given the Scarlet Knights a respectable passing game, while running back Paul James has rushed for 216 yards on only 42 rushing attempts. A balanced offense has allowed Rutgers to score 79 points in their first two games this season. Defense is still a concern, as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are allowing 482.5 yards per game and 6.8 yards per play. Steve Longa leads Rutgers with 15 tackles, while David Milewski and Kemoko Turay each have three tackles for loss.
The Nittany Lions are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. The Scarlet Knights are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games in September.
Due to the recent news from the NCAA, you can bet Penn State will be fired up for this matchup because now the Nittany Lions feel they have a chance to compete for a Big Ten crown. I am a little worried about a feisty Rutgers crowd, but the Nittany Lions have the better talent and a little more to play for in this spot.
Give me Penn State and the small chalk.
