The North Carolina State Wolfpack travel down to Florida to play the South Florida Bulls on Saturday.
North Carolina State is off to a 2-0 start after beating Old Dominion 46-34 on Saturday. The Wolfpack defeated Georgia Southern 24-23 at home in week one. North Carolina State trailed by 3 at halftime, but put up 28 second half points to take down Old Dominion last weekend. The Wolfpack produced 495 total yards, but they allowed 504 yards. The offense lost both of the guys who started at quarterback in 2013 Brandon Mitchell and Pete Thomas, but the team handed the keys of the offense to Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett, who sat out last year due to transfer regulations. Brissett completed 21 of 29 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns against Old Dominion. At running back, the top three backs from 2013 all return in the form of junior Shad Thornton, sophomore Matt Dayes and senior Tony Creecy. Thornton rushed 14 times for 86 yards and an outstanding three touchdowns. The offensive line at NC State is big and experienced as they helped rush for 242 yards on Saturday. The defense is mediocre at best and allowed too many yards against Old Dominion. The defense will need to improve quickly if the Wolfpack want to make some noise in the ACC this year.

The South Florida Bulls lost to Maryland at home 24-17 last weekend, but they did win their season opener over West Carolina in week one. South Florida held a three point lead at halftime but the Bulls were unable to score in the second half. The Bulls produced only 257 total yards, with only 83 coming on the ground. With freshman QB Mike White going down with an injury early on in the game, QB Steven Bench stepped in and completed 14 of 36 passed for 162 yards and one interception. WR Mike McFarland caught 4 balls for 55 yards, while RB Marlon Mack carried the ball 22 times for 73 yards. The South Florida defense allowed 317 total yards to the Terps and forced a whopping 6 turnovers. In 2013, South Florida only won two games and things don’t look promising for this year’s team either. The team has a ton of inexperienced and the defense has too many holes to fill after several starters left the team after last season. This South Florida squad will need another year or two before they can compete at high level and at the least compete with the other AAC opponents.
If South Florida can play solid defense and force some more turnovers they will have a good shot of winning at home this weekend. However, North Carolina State has a good quarterback in Brissett and I think he will take advantage of a mediocre South Florida secondary. As long as Brissett can find some time in the pocket, he will deliver to his targets consistently. I think the Wolfpack earn a win on the road and cover the spread.
