Massachusetts Minutemen (0-2) at Vanderbilt Commodores (0-2)

The Line: Vanderbilt Commodores -17.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: SEC, FOX Sports

The Vanderbilt Commodores and the UMass Minutemen face off on Saturday in Nashville in college football action.

It has been a rough start to the season for the Vanderbilt Commodores losing in blowouts in both of their first two games and scoring 10 combined points. After rotating QB’s I the opener Vandy settled on Stephen Rivers for game two and he was hideous completing just 36 percent of his passes with two interceptions. The running game has been ineffective as Vanderbilt has been playing from well behind but Ralph Webb is the leading ball carrier rushing for 165 yards and Steven Scheu is the leading receiver with six catches. The Vandy defense has recovered three fumbles and has four sacks but the defense has simply been on the field way too much. Stephen Weatherly leads the Commodores defense with 14 tackles, Oren Burks has 13 tackles, and Caleb Azubike has two sacks. Vandy needs to turn things around in a hurry or it is going to be a long season.

The Massachusetts Minutemen are an improving team but that hasn’t led to wins as they have dropped their first two games this season. UMass opened with a neutral site loss to Boston College in Foxboro then they lost by three points in week two to Colorado. UMass QB Blake Frohnapfel has been active but not so accurate competing less than 50 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and an interception. Jamal Wilson and J.T. Blyden have split time in the backfield with Wilson starting but Blyden getting more carries. Tajae Sharp has been the primary receiver with seven catches and a touchdown and Jean Sifrin has two receiving touchdowns. The UMass defense has two interceptions but just two sacks through the first two games. Jovan Santos-Knox has 27 tackles including a sack and Joe Colton has 22 tackles as the UMass defense has been on the field plenty. For the Minutemen to really improve it starts with creating turnovers.

Vanderbilt is 7-3 against a team wit a losing record, 5-1 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread, and 2-5 against the spread following a double-digit home loss. UMass is 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 road games, 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games, and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 non-conference games.

Either of these teams has been overly impressive but I expect UMass to at least compete here and 17 points is just way too many points to a lay for a team that couldn’t cross the 50 yard line for the bulk of their game last week.
