The East Carolina Pirates head to Blacksburg, VA to play the Hokies of Virginia Tech on Saturday.
East Carolina is coming off their first loss of the season at South Carolina, 33-23. The Pirates won their first game of the season 52-7 against North Carolina Central. Against the Gamecocks, East Carolina pulled within 7 points early in the fourth quarter, but South Carolina went on a long drive that ended with a field goal, putting the game out of reach. The Pirates produced a solid 453 total yards against South Carolina. QB Shane Carden completed 32 of 46 passes for 321 yards to go along with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. WR Shaq Roland caught 7 balls for 94 yards, while RB Breon Allen rushed 4 times for 58 yards. The Pirates defense allowed 441 total yards but they forced two turnovers in the loss. East Carolina played a great game and deserved to win the game against a South Carolina team that is struggling to start the season. South Carolina’s secondary isn’t playing well, but now East Carolina will face one of the best secondary units in the nation at Virginia Tech this weekend.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are now 2-0 after beating Ohio State on the road 35-21 on Saturday night. Ohio State had the ball down just 7 points in the final minute of the game, but Hokies CB Donovan Riley picked off J.T. Barrett and took it to the house for a pick six. The game was ugly as the two teams combined for 17 penalties for 169 yards and six turnovers. 10 of the 17 penalties came from the Hokies, who will need to clean up those mistakes moving forward. Virginia Tech produced 324 total yards, while Ohio State gained 327 total yards. QB Michael Brewer played great for the Hokies, completing 22 of 36 passes for 199 yards to go along with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. WR Ryan Malleck caught 6 balls for 64 yards, while RB Deon Newsome rushed 4 times for 38 yards. This was a huge win for Virginia Tech, a team that has struggled over the past few years; this win put them back in the national spotlight. The Hokies will need to take care of business at home over the next few weeks before getting into the heart of their conference schedule.
The Hokies are coming off a huge win and will need to avoid any type of a letdown with East Carolina coming to town. The Pirates are an explosive offensive team, but they will face a tough and stingy Virginia Tech defense. East Carolina will also have to deal with the crowd at Lane Stadium, who will be fired up after the win over Ohio State. I believe the Hokies will actually improve from last week, by cleaning up turnovers and penalties, and will play a strong game at home. East Carolina will hang around early, but Virginia Tech will win by two touchdowns at the end of the day.
