The Portland State Vikings and Washington State Cougars will square off Saturday night at Martin Stadium.
The Portland State Vikings have gotten off to a fast start with a near upset against Oregon State and a crushing defeat over Western Oregon. The Vikings rely heavily on a dominant running game that includes Shaquille Richard, who is averaging 7.3 yards per carry and has a touchdown. Richardson and Paris Penn have combined for 263 rushing yards in two games and are the heartbeat on Portland State’s offense. Starting quarterback Kieran McDonagh is completing just 48.8 percent of his passes and will need to have a bigger game here if the Vikings are to have any shot of pulling off the upset. Defensively, the Portland State Vikings are allowing 467 yards per game and 5.5 yards per play. Corey Crowder leads the Vikings with 14 tackles and Sadat Sulleyman has two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

The Washington State Cougars have gotten off to a brutal 0-2 start and must treat this as a must win if a bowl appearance has any chance of taking place. Washington State has the top passing offense in the country led by Connor Halliday, who is completing 69 percent of his passes for 921 yards, but he’s also thrown three interceptions. Halliday has to get better at taking care of the football and while the Cougars don’t run the ball much, averaging just 1.4 yards per carry is inexcusable. Jamal Morrow has to produce more with his limited touches. Defensively, the Washington State Cougars have just one sack, one forced turnover and are allowing 410 yards per game. Mitchell Peterson leads the Cougars with 20 tackles, while Ivan McLennan and Xavier Cooper each have 1.5 tackles for loss.
This has blowout written all over it, especially with an angy Washington State team taking the field. I expect a 30-point win here.
