The Western Illinois Leathernecks travel to Ryan Field to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday.
The Western Illinois Leathernecks are 2-1 this season with their only loss coming to the Wisconsin Badgers. The Leathernecks are a balanced offensive team that averages five yards per carry and has a productive quarterback in Trenton Norvell, who is completing 67.6 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and 633 yards. Norvell is capable of making plays with his legs as well, as he has 50 rushing yards, but the Wildcats will certainly have their hands full with starting running back J.C. Baker, who is averaging 5.5 yards per carry and had 60 rushing yards in the Wisconsin game. Unlike the loss to Wisconsin, Western Illinois will look to slow this game down by controlling the clock with its successful ground attack. Defensively, the Western Illinois Leathernecks are allowing 18.6 points per game, 348 yards per game and has eight sacks. Luke Venegoni leads the Leathernecks with 24 tackles and three tackles for loss, while Eddy Holtschlag has 2.5 sacks.
USA TODAY Sports
The Northwestern Wildcats are looking for their first victory of the season after a disappointing 0-2 start and have had two weeks to prepare for this game. Northwestern is not getting anything done on the offensive side of the ball, as quarterback Trevor Siemian is completing just 58.8 percent of his passes and has three interceptions, while the Wildcats ground game is averaging 2.5 yards per carry. The bright side offensively for the WIldcats is that Cameron Dickerson and Kyle Prater have both developed into solid receivers and have over 100 receiving yards each. Northwestern needs a spark from one of its running backs to get going. Defensively, the Northwestern Wildcats are allowing 407.5 yards a game and have forced two turnovers and four sacks. Collin Ellis leads Northwestern with 21 tackles and Dean Lowry has 1.5 sacks.
