The Vanderbilt Commodores and the South Carolina Gamecocks face off on Saturday in Nashville in a SEC college football matchup.
The Vanderbilt Commodores finally got into the win column last week knock off UMass in a barnburner. The season started in disappointing fashion for Vandy getting crushed by Temple and thumped by Ole Miss in their first two games. After Stephen Rivers was ineffective in week two Patton Robinette started week three but he has thrown for just 185 yards and a touchdown. Ralph Webb is carrying the load in the backfield with 281 yards and a touchdown and Seven Scheu is Vanderbilt’s leading receiver. The Vanderbilt defense has recovered four fumbles and they have sacked the QB seven times. Nigel Bowden and Stephen Weatherly each have 19 tackles and Caleb Azubike has four sacks. Vandy has had a nice run in recent years but this season looks like it will be a struggle.

The South Carolina Gamecocks got their season on track by upsetting the Georgia Bulldogs in their week three battle but it is still a tough road ahead for SC. QB Dylan Thomspn is improving completing 61 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions but the thing that helps him the most is the running game. Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds appear to be up to speed with Wilds averaging 5.1 yards per carry and Davis averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Nick Jones, Shaq Roland, and Pharoh Cooper lead South Carolina in receiving and they have five touchdowns among them. The Gamecocks defense has two interceptions and three sacks and they are without an interception making these all areas with room for improvement. Skai Morre has 23 tackles and a sack, T.J. Gurley has 18 tackles and an interception, and Rico McWilliams has 13 tackles. South Carolina had huge expectations heading into the season and though they have a loss it happened early so they should have a chance to gain back the ground they have lost in the polls.
Vanderbilt is 10-4 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread, 1-4 against the spread in their last five games, and 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games. South Carolina is 4-0 against the spread following a win, 1-4 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games in September. The road team is 7-3-1 against the spread in the last 11 meetings of these two.
Vanderbilt has been awful but even so South Carolina is over rated by the odds makers and the public here as while the Gamecocks win this one, they don’t do it easily enough to cover the more than three touchdown point spread.
