The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets travel to Blacksburg, VA to play the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday afternoon.
Georgia Tech improved to 3-0 on the year after knocking off Georgia Southern 42-38 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets beat Wofford and Tulane in their first two games this season. Against Georgia Southern, the Yellow Jackets had a 25-point lead heading into the half and allowed the Eagles to score 20 unanswered to blow the big lead. The Yellow Jackets produced 536 yards with an outstanding 348 coming on the ground. QB Justin Thomas played great for Georgia Tech, completing 11 of 24 passes for 188 yards and 4 touchdowns, while also rushing for a team-high 137 yards and 1 touchdown. DeAndre Smelter led the team in receiving with 4 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Zach Laskey rushed for 80 yards on 17 carries. The Georgia Tech defense allowed 528 yards to Georgia Southern and force one turnover in the win. Even though the Yellow Jackets were familiar with the Georgia Southern offensive attack they couldn’t stop the Eagles in the second half. The Yellow Jackets will now head into a hostile environment to play a team that is coming off a terrible loss.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are 2-1 after losing at home to East Carolina 28-21 last weekend. The Hokies had just earned themselves one of the biggest victories in the school’s history with a win over Ohio State in Columbus. But in typical Hokies fashion, they found a way to lose a game that they were double digit favorites in. Virginia Tech has been known in the past to lose a game or two each year when its least expected. East Carolina jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and it proved to be too much for the Hokies to overcome. Virginia Tech produced only 389 total yards compared to the 502 total yards that the Pirates earned. The Hokies turned the ball over twice and only rushed for 91 yards. QB Michael Brewer completed 30 of 56 passes for 298 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. RB Marshawn Williams rushed 17 times for 74 yards, while WR Cam Phillips caught 7 balls for 89 yards and a score. The Hokies defense was dominated in the back half, allowing 427 yards passing to the Pirates. Virginia Tech will now face a run dominate team in Georgia Tech and they will need to put this loss behind them and move on.
These two teams usually play each other pretty tight and I expect the same in this one. Georgia Tech has looked good early on, but they have not played a conference or power conference opponent yet. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech will need to put the loss to East Carolina behind them and focus on stopping the Yellow Jackets rushing attack. I think Virginia Tech will have success rushing the ball and stopping the run. However, this is too many points to give in a game where the team with the ball last could decide the outcome.
