The UCLA Bruins and Arizona State Sun Devils put their undefeated records on the line Thursday at Sun Devil Stadium.
The UCLA Bruins head into this game with quarterback issues, as Brett Hundley is banged up with an elbow injury but he is expected to play in this matchup. While Jerry Neuheisel proved he can hold his own against Texas, Arizona State is a different animal here. While not knowing if Hundley is going to be 100 percent, you expect UCLA’s ground game to lead the way, especially Paul Perkins who has 304 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries. The Bruins have struggled to put points on the board in two of the three games they’ve played this season and a lot of it has to do with the lack of running back depth they have, which was a problem for them last season as well. The Bruins rank 73rd in the country in running the football. Defensively, the UCLA Bruins are allowing 392.3 yards per game and have forced three turnovers and three sacks. Eric Kendricks leads UCLA with 37 tackles and Eddie Vanderdoes has three tackles for loss.

The Arizona State Sun Devils have their first true home game and enter as pretty much the same team a year ago. Offensively, the Sun Devils want to run the ball a ton with D.J. Foster and quarterback Taylor Kelly. The Sun Devils are averaging 7.1 yards per carry, have 12 rushing touchdowns and 10 runs of 20 or more yards in just three games. Foster has done a great job of replacing Marion Grice, and Arizona State’s offense is just as explosive as it was last season. Kelly is completing 61.8 percent of his passes and has six touchdowns and zero interceptions. Defensively, the Arizona State Sun Devils are allowing 396.7 yards per game and have forced six turnovers and six sacks. Damarious Randall leads Arizona State with 27 tackles and four tackles for loss, while Jordan Simone has 23 tackles.
The Bruins are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a bye week and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Thursday games. The Sun Devils are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a bye week and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Bruins are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw that Arizona State was the underdog. We’re giving the home team the points when UCLA has a banged up starting quarterback? Oddmakers do know that it’s hard to win in Tempe, right? The Sun Devils are a solid team on both sides of the ball and are experienced at quarterback. I suggest taking the free field goal, but I highly doubt you’re going to need it.
