The North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Clemson to play the Tigers on Saturday night.
North Carolina dropped to 2-1 on the season after losing badly at East Carolina 70-41 on Saturday. North Carolina beat Liberty and San Diego State to start the season, but they were embarrassed by East Carolina last weekend. Against the Pirates, UNC gained 439 total yards, committed 8 penalties for 85 yards, and turned the ball over once. QB Marquise Williams completed 14 of 25 passes for 127 yards and one interception. WR Mack Hollins caught 4 balls for 92 yards, while RB Romar Morris carried the ball 9 times for 46 yards and two touchdowns. The Tar Heel defense allowed East Carolina to rack up a whopping 789 total yards, 446 passing and 343 rushing. North Carolina had trouble getting off the field on 3rd down and the Tar Heels had no answer for East Carolina QB Shane Carden. The Tar Heels will have to get used to competing in high scoring games because it doesn’t seem like the defense will be improving any time soon. North Carolina will have to put the East Carolina loss behind them quickly as the Tar Heels will now head into conference play where it won’t get any easier.

The Clemson Tigers are 1-2 on the year after a devastating loss at Florida State in overtime 23-17 last weekend. The Tigers lost to Georgia by 24 points to start the season and then beat South Carolina State for their first win. In the loss to Florida State, Clemson outgained the Seminoles 407 to 317 in total yards. Clemson forced two turnovers and only committed 3 penalties. Clemson converted only 5 of 16 on 3rd down and the one turnover proved to be costly for the Tigers in the end. QB Deshaun Watson completed 19 of 28 passes for 266 yards, while also rushing for 30 yards and one touchdown. WR Mike Williams caught 2 balls for 72 yards, while RB C.J. Davidson rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries for the Tigers. The Clemson defense held Florida State to only 13 rushing yards and a season low 23 points. Looking forward, Clemson has a legit passing game with Watson and Williams leading the way, along with solid running back in Davidson. The Tigers defense is stout up front and they will need to improve in the secondary as the year goes on. Clemson will need to get over this heart breaking loss quickly as they continue conference play this weekend.
I think Clemson gained some confidence in their loss against Florida State even though they deserved the win at the end of the day. If Clemson can avoid any type of letdown I think they will take advantage of a weak North Carolina team on both sides of the ball. North Carolina plays little to no defense most of the time and the Tigers should be able to rack up some points early and often. Meanwhile, Clemson should stop the Tar Hell rushing attack and force North Carolina to be one-dimensional. I’ll take Clemson to win by 20 in a high scoring affair.
