The North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Notre Dame to play the Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon.
North Carolina dropped to 2-3 on the season after losing at home to Virginia Tech 34-17 last weekend. The Tar Heels have now lost three straight games after starting the year out 2-0. North Carolina got blown out by East Carolina, and lost to Clemson on the road before losing to the Hokies on Saturday. North Carolina managed 323 total yards but turned the ball over 3 times and committed 10 penalties for 62 yards in the loss. QB Marquise Williams completed 17 of 33 passes for 187 yards and 1 touchdown. Williams also led the Tar Heels in rushing with 94 yards on 19 carries. WR Ryan Switzer led North Carolina in receiving with 5 catches for 67 yards. The North Carolina defense allowed 357 total yards, 171 coming on the ground. The Tar Heels are giving up an average of 42 points per game, which ranks 125th in the country. North Carolina’s problems on defense won’t and can’t be fixed over night, which means they may be in for a long day on Saturday.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish improved to 5-0 on the season after beating Stanford 17-14 at home last weekend. Notre Dame had knocked off Rice, Michigan, Purdue, and Syracuse before the huge win over the Cardinal on Saturday. The Fighting Irish defense is outstanding this season, holding opponents to an average of 12 points per game, which ranks 3rd in the nation. Against Stanford, Notre Dame held the Cardinal to only 205 total yards and forced two turnovers in the win. Meanwhile, the Notre Dame offense gained 370 total yards but turned the ball over twice. QB Everett Golson completed only 20 of 43 passes for 241 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. WR Chris Brown caught 4 balls for 60 yards and a touchdown. RB Cam McDaniel rushed 15 times for 41 yards. Notre Dame will now face a weak North Carolina team before traveling down to Florida and playing the #1 team in the country next week. The Fighting Irish are experienced and well coached and they will need that leadership this week to avoid any type of letdown.
Notre Dame is in a position to make a big run this season after knocking off #14 ranked Stanford Cardinal last week. The Fighting Irish are in a prime letdown spot this week coming off a big win and having Florida State on deck. However, I think Notre Dame will have no problem destroying North Carolina this weekend. The Tar Heels will be unable to stop Golson and the Fighting Irish offense, while the Notre Dame defense will remain strong.
