The Line: Pittsburgh Panthers +2 -- Over/Under: 47 See the Latest Odds
The Virginia Tech Hokies travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers on Thursday night at Heinz Field.
The Virginia Tech Hokies improved to 4-2 on the year after beating North Carolina 34-17 on the road two weeks ago. The Hokies had a week off to prepare after bouncing back with two straight wins following two losses at home against East Carolina and Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech earned a victory at Ohio State in week two, but followed that win with two losses at home. However, the Hokies are looking to run the table from here on out and earn a spot in the ACC championship game. Virginia Tech has a defense that is giving up only 19.8 points per game, which ranks 23rd in the country. The Hokies have an experienced secondary that has the ability of covering elite wide receivers, while the front seven is aggressive and fast. Virginia Tech is averaging 30.5 points per game, while averaging 237 yards thru the air and 174 rushing yards per game. Junior QB Michael Brewer has thrown for 1,409 yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. Freshman WR Isaiah Ford leads the team in receiving with 366 yards and 4 touchdowns. Freshman RB Marshawn Williams has carried the ball 85 times for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Hokies. Virginia Tech will be playing their 3rd game on the road this season, having beat North Carolina and Ohio State on the road already.

The Pittsburgh Panthers dropped to 3-3 on the season after losing at Virginia 24-19 two weeks ago. The Panthers beat Delaware, Boston College, and FIU to start the season. Since then, the Panthers have lost to Iowa, Akron, and now Virginia. The Pittsburgh defense has played well and has kept them in games when the offense has struggled, allowing an averaging of 19 points per game, which ranks 17th in the country. The Panthers offense is averaging 30.5 points per game, while averaging only 161 passing yards and 243.8 passing yards per game. After scoring 62, 30, and 42 points in their first three game, the Panthers have not scored more than 20 points in their past three games. Sophomore QB Chad Voytik has passed for only 949 yards with 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions this season. Sophomore WR Tyler Boyd is a great player who has 30 catches for 428 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Sophomore RB James Conner may be the best player on the team, as he has rushed for 874 yards and 9 touchdowns so far this season. The Panthers will be hosting their fourth game of the season; Pittsburgh has lost two straight at home.
Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech have only played twice since 2003. The teams split both meetings, with Virginia Tech beating Pittsburgh at home by 10-points last season. I believe this will be a low scoring game. Pittsburgh will find it difficult to run against the Hokies front seven and they will not have much success throwing the ball against a solid Virginia Tech secondary. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh defense will try to shut down the run and force Brewer to throw that ball which could lead to some turnovers. I think Virginia Tech will find a way to squeak out a win late and this game will remain under 47 points.
