The Line: South Alabama Jaguars -17 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Georgia State Panthers bring their big offense on the road to face the defense of the South Alabama Jaguars.
The Georgia State Panthers never got their offense going in a 52-10 defeat at the hands of visiting Arkansas State in week seven. When the Panthers struggle to score this team is in trouble because keeing opponents off the scoreboard hasn't been a strength. This was the worse possible scenario with the Red Woves jumping out to a 24-0 lead after one quarter on the way to 618 yards behind dominant rushing and passing attacks. On the flip side the Panthers mustered just 269 yards and were 6-16 on third down conversions while turning the ball over twice. The running game averaged just over two yards per touch so Georgia State turned to the passing of Nick Arbuckle who completed 18-36 for 162 yards which obviously wasn't enough. The game in a nutshell came down to being able to match scores with Arkansas State which is the MO of the Panthers.
USA TODAY Sports
The South Alabama Jaguars aren't known for their offensive prowess but did give their defense plenty of points to work with in a 47-21 road victory versus Appalachian State Saturday as a four point favorite. USA was up 20-7 at the half and 40-7 at the end of three quarters before calling off the wolves in a one sided affair. The Mountaineers moved the ball late when the outcome was decided and finished with almost 400 yards and a trio of turnovers. The Jaguars let loose with a season high 582 yards with plenty of ability to run and throw as they pleased. Brandon Bridge threw for 339 yards with touchdowns of 13 yards and 67 yards to Shavarez Smith with hitting Danny Woodson with a 43 yard scoring strike. The USA ground game was a three headed attack with Xavier Johnson, Jay Jones and Terrance Timmons combining 197 yards with Timmons scoring on a 30 yard run.
Georgia State is 5-0 ATS in their last five road games versus a team with a winning home record while the over is 6-0-1 in the last seven when allowing more then 40 points in their previous game. South Alabama is 4-0 ATS in the past four with a SU win of more then 20 points while the under has hit in five consecutive home games. South Alabama won this game 38-17 in 2013 in their first ever meeting and have gone 3-2 ATS in 2014 while the Panthers are 3-3.
I don't see a whole lot that has changed fro this season and 2013 regarding these teams as Georgia State depends on scoring and South Alabama depends on defense. In a perfect world the Jaguars should be able to score here while containing the Panthers scoring but 17 points is still a big number fot the Jaguars...
