War Memorial Stadium and the Wyoming Cowboys brace for a visit from the San Jose State Spartans.
The San Jose Spartans headed in to their bye week with a much needed 33-10 victory versus visiting UNLV that upped their record to 2-3. The Rebels scored first but the Spartans scored 33 straight pointrs to end this before the 4th quarter even began. It was dominance on both sides of the ball as the Rebels managed only 221 yards and 12 dirst downs while converting on 3-14 third downs. It was the complete opposite for the Spartans who moved the chains with ease with the run or pass on the way to 542 yards and almost 39 minutes of possession. SJSU received 265 passing yards from Joe Gray who hit Hansel Wilson with a 53 yard scoring strike. The Wyoming Cowboys need a shift in momentum after a 38-28 defeat at Hawaii has the team staring at back to back losses. The Cowboys led this one 14-0 and 28-17 but were handled easily in the second half with the Warriors outscoring them 28-7. Hawaii piled up 513 yards and the struggling passing game didn't struggle with two quarterbacks throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys had no answer with just 322 yards to lean on with a 3-15 performance on third down conversions. The bright spot for the defense was a fumble return for six but the offense still couldn't keep up. Shaun Wick ran for 124 yards on 24 totes including a 20 yard touchdown run Colby Kirkegaard gave Wyoming 220 yard through the ait with 17 yard and 42 yard scoring tosses to DJ May and Jalen Claiborne who caught six balls for a game high 121 yards.
The over is 4-0-1 in the Spartans last five after an ATS win while going 6-1 ATS in the last seven after rushing for more then 200 yards in their previous game. The Cowboys are 0-5 ATS versus a team with a losing record and are 0-4 ATS when allowing more then 200 rushing yards in their previous game. Overall San Jose State is 2-3 ATS and the Cowboys are 2-4 against the number.
These teams were locked in a scorefest a season ago with San Jose State winning 51-44 at home. I don't think we'll see those types of fireworks although both squads are capable of scoring. I think the Spartans are the better club but the high altitude at Wyoming should give the home team an advantage. I could be talked out of this one but for now I'll back the Spartans and have a final decision by Friday...
