The Syracuse Orange travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
Syracuse dropped to 3-7, 1-5 ACC after losing to Duke at home 27-10 two weeks ago. Syracuse played their final home game, losing six of seven at home overall this season. The only team the Orange have defeated in conference play is Wake Forest, who is down right awful this year. The Syracuse defense is allowing an average of 23.4 points per game, which rank 38th in the country this season. The Orange’s offense is averaging only 19.1 points per game, which ranks almost dead last in the country this season. QB AJ Long, who has taken over for Terrel Hunt, has completed only 56% of his passes for 727 yards with 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. WR Jarrod West leads the team in receiving with 44 receptions for 655 yards. RB Prince-Tyson Gulley has a team-high 568 rushing yards and 1 touchdown for the Orange. The Orange will have had two weeks to prepare for this game. Syracuse will play their final two games on the road where they are 2-1 this season.

The Pittsburgh Panthers dropped to 4-6, 2-4 ACC after losing at North Carolina 40-35 last weekend. The Panthers, despite being a talented team, have lost six of their last seven games overall. Three of their six losses have come by 5 points or less. Against the Tar Heels, Pittsburgh allowed 502 total yards, forced no turnovers, and had trouble getting off the field on 3rd down. On the season, the Panthers defense is allowing 27.7 points per game, which ranks 75th in the country. QB Chad Voytik completed only 11 of 16 passes for 218 yards with 1 touchdown against North Carolina. WR Tyler Boyd had an outstanding day with 5 catches for 160 yards and a score. RB James Conner, one of the best runners in the country, finished with 220 yards on 30 carries with 4 touchdowns. The Pittsburgh offense ranks 52nd in the country this season, putting up an average just north of 31 points a game this season. This will be the final home game for the Panthers who are 2-4 at Heinz Field this season.
Pittsburgh has won eight of the last nine meetings with Syracuse, including a 17-16 win at Syracuse last season. Syracuse’s quarterback, AJ Long, is questionable for the game on Saturday. Either way, the Orange have not played well offensively and even against a mediocre Pittsburgh defense, they will likely struggle again. Meanwhile, Voytik, Conner, and Boyd will have big games in front of the home crowd for the last time this season. I expect Pittsburgh to come out strong and come away with the win and cover the spread.
