The Northern Iowa Panthers visit instate rival the Iowa State Cyclones to open the season.
The Northern Iowa Panthers finished third in the MVFC at 9-5 and earned a trip to the FCS playoffs. The Panthers were dangerous on both sides of the ball as they outscored opponents 32-20 behind a balanced attack and a defense that was stout against both the pass and run. Quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen threw for over 1,600 yards and will be throwing to Charles Brown (19-315) and Branden Lehman (11-203). Miller Darrian is the top runner back with 332 yards with David Johnson taking over 1,600 yards to graduation. UNI gets a pair of starters back along the offensive line as well as most of their top receivers so there are many holes to fill among the skill positions.

The Iowa State Cyclones are looking to improve on their 2-10 record of a year ago where they were outscored 39-23. Sam Richardson will be under center once again after throwing for over 2,600 yards and is the leading returning runner back with 589 yards. His top target in Allen Lazard (46-502) is back with D’Vario Montgomery (44-605) part of the Cyclones receiver by committee air game. The rushing attack needs a few players to step up with Tyler Brown and Joshua Thomas being the main focus with several three star recruits getting a look. The line lost two but get five back with at least ten games of starting experience. The D-Line and secondary have plenty of experience but the bottom line is opponents moved the chains on this group.
The under is 5-1 in Panthers last 6 non-conference games and Northern Iowa are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games while the under is 5-2 in Panthers last 7 games overall. The Cyclones are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games on grass and the under is 4-0 in Cyclones last 4 games overall while Iowa State are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. This isn’t a slam dunk for either team but the Panthers are a decent FCS squad and if they play well a cover is possible…
