The Marshall Thundering Herd open 2015 with a visit from the Purdue Boilermakers.
The Purdue Boilermakers ended 2014 at 3-9 and were outscored 32-24 so the numbers weren’t good overall but weren’t absolutely horrendous. It looks like Austin Appleby will at least begin the season under center but if fumbles and throws interceptions right out of the gate his job could be in jeopardy. The star of the receiving corps is Danny Anthrop if he can stay healthy but he needs a few others to step up and help out. Appleby and Keyante Green are the top returning runners that have plenty of experience on the offensive line to be a threat. The defense has holes to plug in the secondary and defensive line and if they do this defense isn’t awful.

With Rakeem Cato plying his wares in the CFL can the Marshall Thundering Herd match their 13-1 record of a year ago. Cato was a key figure with over 3,900 passing yards but if Michael Birdsong is competent the weapons are in place for a formidable offense. Deon-Tay McManus and Angelo Jean-Louis lead the receiving unit with Hyleck Foster and Davonte Allen providing quality depth. Devon Johnson leads a loaded backfield that fields three returning linemen. With some losses along the defensive line the pass rush might take a step back with opponents certain to try their luck running the ball. In a nutshell the front seven has some voids and the secondary is solid.
The Boilermakers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall and are 3-1-2 ATS in their last 6 road games while Purdue are 3-1-2 ATS in their last 6 games on fieldturf. The over is 5-0 in Thundering Herd last 5 vs. Big Ten while the Thundering Herd are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September. I am just going with a loaded Marshall club right or wrong…
