BYU vs. Boise State - 9/12/15 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Boise State Broncos (1-0) at BYU Cougars (1-0)

College Football: Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 10:15 pm (LaVell Edwards Stadium)

The Line: BYU Cougars +1.5 -- Over/Under: 55 See the Latest Odds

The Boise State Broncos will travel to LaVell Edwards Stadium to take on the BYU Cougars this Saturday night in College Football action.

The 20th ranked Boise State Broncos (1-0, 0-0 MW) was able to hang on and defeat the Washington Huskies 16-13 this past Saturday. The Broncos were able to jump out to a 16-0 halftime lead but had to rely on a missed a 46 yard field goal by Washington to secure the victory.  The Broncos offensive outgained the Huskies by a 158 yard margin and was led by RB Jeremy McNichols who had 89 rushing yards and 2 TD. QB Ryan Finley struggled throughout the night and only compiled 129 yds on 26 attempts with no TD’s and one interception.  Finley spread the ball out to various receivers as six Broncos receivers had at least 2 receptions. Boise State’s defensive was outstanding as they held the Huskies to just 179 yards and forced Washington into committing two turnovers. Head coach Bryan Harsin will need to work hard this week on special teams as they gave numerous big plays including a 76 punt return that allowed Washington to stay in the game. Boise State lost some of their better playmakers on offensive from the 2014 season in QB Grant Hedrick and Jay Ajayi, and although they looked a bit sluggish of offensive, they are still the team to beat in the Mountain West.

BYU vs. Boise State - 9/12/15 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The BYU Cougars (1-0) won one of the most exciting games of the weekend when they connected on a 42 yard Hail Mary pass in the closing seconds of the game to defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 33-28 this past Saturday. The win was a bit bittersweet as the Cougars lost their Heisman candidate in QB Taysom Hill for the second straight season as he will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Hill was playing well as the combined for 340 yards (268 passing, 72 rushing) and three TD’s. BYU will now rely on backup Tanner Mangum who did a nice job filling in for Hill as he was 7-1 with 111 yards and the game winning TD. Nick Kurtz (5 receptions, 123 yards) and Mitch Mathews (3 receptions, 69 yards, 2 TD) led the way for the BYU receivers. BYU outgained the Cornhuskers by a 511-445 margin but will have to improve a defense that only returned 5 starters from last year’s team. BYU is still a very talented team with Taysom Hill but it will be interesting how Tanner Mangum handles the high-powered BYU offense going forward.

The Broncos are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss. The Cougars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win and 2-6 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Boise State certainly didn’t look like a top-25 team on Saturday however, I think that they’ll have an easier time scoring on the BYU defensive and won’t have the same special team miscues that almost cost them the game against Washington. BYU is still a talented team but losing Taysom Hill will hurt this team and I think that the Broncos defense will be able to contain Tanner Mangum and the Cougar offense enough to cover this small spread.
