The Florida Gators and the East Carolina Pirates face off on Saturday at the Swamp in college football action.
The Jim McElwain era got off to a big start as the Florida Gators rolled New Mexico State in their opener. UF’s tandem approach at QB worked well so far with Treon Harris and Will Grier completing over 81 percent of their passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns with Grier rushing for 44 yards and Harris rushing for 23. The Gators rushing attack was anchored by Kelvin Taylor who rushed for 54 yards and Demarcus Robinson led the receivers with six receptions though 14 Florida players caught at least one pass. The Florida defense allowed just 200 total yards in a dominating performance against an overmatched opponent. Jonathan Bullard, Jalen Tabor, and Alex Anzalone each had five tackles to lead the Florida defense. Florida was impressive but their opponent wasn’t but their appears to be a better focus with McElwain at the helm.

The East Carolina Pirates offense looked like they were in midseason form in their season opener again Townson but the defense looked like they were in the first day of camp. ECU QB Blake Kemp completed 78.4 percent of his passes for 230 yards in an efficient effort. The East Carolina rushing attack was sharp with Chris Hairston rushing for 154 yards and four touchdowns and Anthony Scott rushing for 60 yards while Isaiah Jones led the Pirates with six receptions. The ECU defense looked shabby at best allowing 416 total yards including 179 on the ground. Jordan Williams and Zeek Bigger led ECU in tackles with 10 each while Rocco Scarfone added eight tackles. So far it looks like if ECU is going to have any kind of season they are going to need to keep the defense off of the field.
Florida is 4-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 6-13 against the spread in their last 19 home games, and 12-5-1 against the spread in their last 18 September games. East Carolina is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 non-conference games, 0-5 against the spread in their last five road games, and 7-20 against the spread following a win.
Oddly enough these two played last season in a bowl game with Florida winning by eight points but ECU is missing some big pieces on offense. ECU’s defense was strong last year against the run and it was surprising just how bad they looked in week one but I see them bouncing back here and keeping it close enough to get the cover.
