The New Mexico Lobos are not accustomed to being on the winning end of a big score but they were in week one with a 66-0 demolition of FCS Mississippi Valley State. This was over at the coin flip with the Delta Devils held to a mere 74 yards with a fumble and interception returned for scores. The Lobos had no such issue with a 521 yard explosion that featured a big day rushing the football. Lamar Jordan did give UNM a solid effort in the air with 103 yards on 7-7 while adding 62 yards and a score with his legs. Daryl Chestnut led the New Mexico ground game with 108 yards on just six touches with a pair of trips to the end zone. Altogether 12 players logged carries and six caught passes as the Lobos went to the bench early.
The Golden Hurricane have not been very good for several years and their defense might not be strong once again but the offense has promise. We can’t draw a thing from the Lobos massacre of Mississippi Valley State because this was zero competition. I do know New Mexico will run against the Golden Hurricane but I think Tulsa is competitive and hopefully enough to cover although I wouldn’t bet the house…
