The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Kentucky Wildcats face off on Saturday in Columbia in a SEC college football matchup.
The South Carolina Gamecocks got their season off to a winning start knocking off North Carolina in Charlotte. South Carolina QB Connor Mitch was anything but impressive completing just 40.9 percent of his passes for 122 yards while carrying the ball 10 times for 47 yards against one of the worst defenses in the nation a year ago. The South Carolina Rushing attack is once again anchored by Brandon Wilds who averaged 3.6 yards per carry in the first game and who doesn’t look like he likes to hit the hoie while Shon Carson gained 75 yards on just four carries. Gamecocks WR Paroh Cooper is simply one of the most exciting and best overall player sint he nation but with few options around him he was limited in the opener catching three balls as Steve Spurier will need to find more creative ways to get him the football. The South Carolina defense was gouged for 440 yards but they got it doe where it counts, on the scoreboard. Skai Moore led the South Carolina defense with 10 tackles and two interceptions and Isaiah Johnson, Cedrick Cooper, and Chris Lammons each had five tackles. South Carolina is off to be better start than they had last season but I am not convinced this team is any better.

The Kentucky Wildcats got out to a big lead on Saturday against UL-Lafayette but they ended up holding on for dear life to get the win. UK QB Patrick Towles complete just 47.1 percent of his passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. The Kentucky rushing game was led by Stanley Boom Williams who rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries and Garret Johnson led he Cats in receiving with five receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. The Kentucky defense was gouged for 479 yards including 247 on the ground. Josh Forrest was UK’s leading tackler with 10.5 including a sack and an interception, Khalid Henderson had seven tackles including a sack, and Denzil Ware had six tackles. While there is some excitement around Kentucky following last season’s improvement this is clearly a team with a lot of holes.
South Carolina is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, 9-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-9 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Kentucky is 4-1 against the spread following a win, 7-19 against the spread in their last 26 road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games.
I have some serious concerns about both teams as their defenses can be had and their offenses are inconsistent at best and I see this one being close and decided by turnovers so I will take better than a touchdown with Kentucky.
