The Appalachian State Mountaineers will travel to S.B. Ballard Stadium to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in College Football action this Saturday afternoon.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers fell to 1-1 (0-0 Sun Belt) on the season after getting defeated 41-10 by the 12th ranked Clemson Tigers on September 13th. Appalachian State was the pre-season favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference this season but wasn’t able to do much against the Tigers as they went down 31-0 by halftime. The Mountaineers were outgained by Clemson by a 392-297 margin and committed four turnovers in the loss. The Mountaineers had some success on the ground as they gained 202 rushing yards in the contest led by Marcus Cox who had 103 yards on 25 carries. Appalachian State wasn’t able to get anything going in the air in the contest as QB Taylor Lamb finished the day completing just 9 of 28 passes for 95 yards, a TD, and 3 INT. The Mountaineers pretty much return their entire 2014 team that finished the season with six straight victories and are led by their back field that includes Marcus Cox and Terrence Upshaw. Appalachian State only allowed 25.0 ppg in conference play last season and is led by DE Ronald Blair and DB Doug Middleton.

The Old Dominion Monarchs dropped to 2-1 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after being defeated 38-14 by the North Carolina State Wolfpack 38-14 this past Saturday. ODU couldn’t find any answers on the offense end as they were outgained by NC State by a 435 to 148 margin. The Monarchs running game was basically non-existent as they finished the game gaining -3 yards on 21 carries. Leading the way for ODU was QB Shuler Bentley who completed 11 of 23 passes for 151 yards and 2 TD’s and WR Ray Lawry who had 2 receptions for 71 yards and a TD. The Monarchs lost their star QB from the 2014 squad in Taylor Heinicke and have struggled a bit on the offense end as they are averaging just 152.3 passing yards per game. The Monarchs rely heavily on their running game and will continue to look to Ray Lawry (70 att, 453 yards 6 TD) to lead their offensive attack. ODU’s defense has looked better than they did in 2014 when they allowed 42.1 ppg in conference play last season as early in the season, they are allowing just 27.3 ppg. The defense is led by LB TJ Ricks who currently has racked up 29 tackles on the season.
The Mountaineers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU loss of more than 20 points and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Monarchs are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in September.
Appalachian State is a talented and experienced team that led the Sun Belt conference in yards allowed last season by holding their opponents to 374.5 yds/game. ODU brought back many of their offensive weapons but that loss of QB Taylor Heinicke seems to be taking it’s affect as the ODU’s offense hasn’t looked great in their last two games against NC State and Norfolk State. Appalachian State will probably deploy a similar game plan that NC State did in stopping ODU’s rushing attack and as I don’t feel ODU will be able too much against through the air, I see Appalachian pulling away from ODU in the 2nd half in this one. Take Appalachian State to cover this spread.
