USA TODAY Sports

The South Florida Bulls used a strong defensively effort to go on the road and defeat the East Carolina Pirates 22-17 this past Saturday to improve to 5-4 (3-2 American East) on the season. South Florida held East Carolina to just 220 yards of offensive and only allowed to Pirates to gain 8 first downs for the entire game. Leading the way for the Bulls was QB Quinton Flowers who completed 12 of 23 passes for 200 yards and 2 TD. On the season, South Florida is averaging 27.7 ppg on 396.9 yards per game (179.9 passing, 217.0 rushing). The Bulls have an outstanding rushing attack that is led by Shannon Mack who had 4 TD’s on the season while averaging 104.38 yards per game. QB Quinton Flowers has been average in the passing game compiling 12 TD and 6 INT on 160.7 passing yards per game but has done some damage with his legs as Flowers has 7 rushing TD’s on the season while adding an average of 73.00 rushing yards per game. South Florida doesn’t have a receiver that averages more than 3 receptions per game and is led by Rodney Adams (2.7 rec/game, 47.6 yds/game, 6 TD) and D’Ernest Johnson (2.0 rec/game, 27.4 yds/game, 4 TD). Defensively, South Florida is holding their opponents to an average of 22.2 ppg on 369.0 yards per game (215.4 passing, 153.6 rushing). The Bulls have a turnover margin of plus 3 on the season and are led defensively by LB Jamie Byrd who has 65 tackles, 5.0 sacks and 2 INT.

The Owls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Bulls are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 home games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

Temple and South Florida are very similar teams in the fact that they look to run the football and play solid defense. Temple currently has a 2 game lead over South Florida in the American East standings and knowing that the Bulls are really the only team that could realistically catch them, I don’t think they’ll overlook this matchup before taking on Memphis next week. Temple has one of the most experienced and talented defenses in the country and as their strength is defending the run, I think they’ll be able to limit South Florida from putting many points up and the board and cover this spread. Take Temple to cover.
