The Marshall Thundering Herd look for a win versus the Connecticut Huskies in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
The Connecticut Huskies got ‘hot’ just in the nick of time with wins in three of four to end the season at 6-6 and become Bowl eligible. The Huskies success depends on their defense controlling the scoreboard as they were outscored 20-18. The UConn defense allowed 352 yards with just 187 yards allowed through the air while the offense was ranked #120 at 318 yards but didn’t stand out in any one area. QB Bryant Shirreffs completed 60% of his throws for nearly 2,000 yards with nine TD’s and seven INT’s with Noel Thomas (54-719) and Arkeel Newsome (40-432) leading the receiving corps. Newsome was also the top runner with 756 yards on 173 touches so he was the focus of the Connecticut attack.

Suffice to say the Marshall Thundering Herd did not threaten perfection and did not repeat as the CUSA champion so the loss of Rakeem Cato was likely a bigger issue then most thought. Marshall outscored people 33-18 but the offense averaged around 400 yards and were middle of the pack running and throwing. The defense was probably the strongest unit on the field with 373 yards given up and were #33 versus the pass with a little over 200 yards given up. Needless to say that quarterback Chase Litton was under the microscope and his numbers weren’t bad with nearly 2,400 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Davonte Allen and DeAndre Reaves were 600+ yard receivers while Devon Johnson (84-555) , Hyleck Foster (85-406), Remi Watson (80-398) and Tony Pittman (64-327) giving Marshall options on the ground.
The Huskies are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. CUSA and the under is 8-0 in Huskies last 8 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game while going 4-0 in Huskies last 4 non-conference games. The under is 4-0 in Thundering Herd last 4 games following a straight up loss and is 6-0 in Thundering Herd last 6 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points while Marshall are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. The only chance UConn has is to muddy the water and if successful I like the under…
