Georgia Southern Eagles 2016 Preview
The Georgia Southern Eagles have the pieces to make themselves heard in the 2016 Sun Belt race.
Overview: With Willie Fritz heading to Tulane, Tyson Summers takes over an experienced Eagles squad that is already expecting to challenge for the conference crown. Realistic or unrealistic, the fans expect another big season regardless of what happens with the coach and won’t be happy otherwise.

Offense: The offense won’t change because it can’t so the Eagles will run virtually every down and almost everyone is back from 2015. Quarterback Kevin Ellison threw for nearly 600 yards on 45% so putting the ball in the air wasn’t a specialty but Ellison ran for 743 yards and averaged 6.8 yards and distributed the ball well. Matt Breida is back after leading the Eagles with 1,615 rushing yards with LA Ramsby adding anoth 816 yards.Wesley Fields and backup QB Favian Upshaw combined for over 1,200 yards on the ground but Georgia Southern returns every runner from last year. BJ Johnson is back after leading GSU with 15 catches for 249 yards while #4 target Myles Campbell caught eight balls for 130 yards. Three starters are back along the O-Line with the Eagles returning five players with starting experience.
Defense: New Eagles DC Lorenzo Costantini inherits one of the most experienced and deep defensive lines in college football with all 13 players that saw the field back with DT Jamal Johnson and end Bernard Dawson combining for 12.5 TFL and seven sacks. Georgia Southern will miss linebacker Antwione Williams and his 10.5 TFL but the next four are back so the cupboard certainly isn’t bare along the front seven. However, as loaded as the Eagles front seven is the secondary is the complete opposite with six of the top seven gone with Darius Jones seeing action in 13 games while recording two picks and four pass break ups. Having said that, this unit has plenty of three star athletes coming in and they will see the field.
Special Teams: Matt Flynn will take over punt duties and kicker Younghoe Koo will also become the full time place kicker but replacing return man Derek Keaton and his quality kick and punt returns has to be a priority for this group.
Outlook: I don’t think Georgia Southern is the best team in the Sun Belt but they should not be overlooked in any circumstance. The Eagles will win plenty of games and go Bowling and perhaps make a run at the conference title.
