The California Golden Bears will play the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Sydney, Australia to start the 2016 college football season.

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are coming off of a 3-10 season and will be coming into 2016 with a new head coach. Hawaii’s offense struggled last season, only averaging 17.6 points per game. The quarterback position has been up for grabs during the early practices, but it looks like it will be Ikaika Woolsey, who is in his 5th year and has started 19 games in the past few years. At running back, Hawaii returns Paul Harris, who ran for 1,132 yards and 6 touchdowns. Hawaii is also returning their leading receiver, Marcus Kemp, from last season. Hawaii is very deep at receiver this season, which will help whichever quarterback gets the starting nod. On defense, the Rainbow Warriors have a new coordinator, who will use the 4-3 defense. Jerrol Garcia-Williams, linebacker, is the leading tackler that is returning. Garcia-Williams had 89 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season. Hawaii allowed 35.6 points per game last season and will need to improve on that to be competitive. Rigoberto Sanchez figures to take care of the kicking and punting, as he did in 2015.

USA TODAY Sports

The California Golden Bears are coming off of an 8-5 season, where they won the Armed Forces Bowl by a score of 55-36 against Air Force. Last season, Cal averaged 37.9 points per game on offense. California lost their star quarterback, Jared Goff, from last season, but gained a replacement when Davis Webb transferred from Texas Tech. Khalfani Muhammad, Tre Watson, and Vic Enwere combined for over 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and all will be returning for 2016. Cal lost a lot of production at the receiver position from last season, and will be replacing them with a group of young, fast receivers. Defensively, Cal allowed 30.7 points per game in 2015. Damariay Drew, safety, is the leading tackler that is returning for Cal, with 71 tackles and 2 interceptions last year. Matt Anderson will be the placekicker this season, while Dylan Klumph will be the punter.

California is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games in August. California is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. The over is 8-2 in Cal’s last 10 neutral site games. Hawaii is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games against the PAC-12. Hawaii is 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The over is 5-0 in Hawaii’s last 5 games overall.

Hawaii has a long way to go to becoming competitive against, while California should be able to bounce back from losing their star quarterback with Webb transferring in. Cal should have another dynamic offense and should have no problem against the Hawaii defense. I like California to win this game easily.
