On Saturday, September 3 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will meet up with the Boston College Eagles in college football action.

Georgia Tech finished 2015 with a disappointing 3-9 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the ACC. Ninth-year head coach Paul Johnson has certainly seen better days with the program.

As an offense, the Yellow Jackets posted an average of just 121.3 YPG passing and did most of their work on the ground, with an average of 256.7 YPG rushing. QB Justin Thomas returns to Georgia Tech this season; Thomas posted 1,339 yards passing last season with a 13:8 TD:INT ratio and also led the team in rushing with 485 yards and six scores on 144 attempts. RB Clinton Lynch is with Georgia Tech again this year following a 2015 in which he put up 457 rush yards on 48 totes and another 267 yards with three scores on 11 receptions.

On defense, the Yellow Jackets allowed a fairly respectable 202.9 yards passing per game last season alongside 165.1 rush yards per game. Linebacker P.J. Davis, who was the team’s leading tackler with 77 total last year, returns to the team in 2016. Davis will have his work cut out for him with Jamal Golden and Tyler Marcordes (the team’s Nos. 2 and 3 tacklers last year) gone from the Jackets.

As for Boston College, they’re trying to better a 3-9 campaign from 2015, when they failed to win a conference game all year (0-8). That puts fourth-year head coach Steve Addazio firmly on the hot seat.

The Eagles offense wasn’t able to do much through the air last season, struggling to a flimsy 110.9 pass yards per game. Boston College fared a little better on the ground, posting a 164.7 YPG mark. Senior transfer QB Patrick Towles will try to better that passing mark this year, and he’ll be aided by primary RB Jon Hilliman, who logged 51 carries for 198 yards and two scores in his freshman campaign. Lead receiver Thaddius Smith is back again as well. Smith is coming off 17 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns last year.

Conversely, the Boston College defense was pretty good last year. The squad allowed just 83.3 YPG rushing and 171.3 YPG passing in 2015. The Eagles lose leading tackler Steven Daniels (82 total tackles), but retain Connor Strachan, who posted 75 tackles last season.

The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral-site games, and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games in September. Georgia Tech is also 1-7 ATS in their last eight conference games, and 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

As for Boston College, they’re 6-1 ATS in their last seven games on grass, and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 neutral-site games. The Eagles are also 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games in September, and the under is 4-1 in their last five games in September.

This game probably won’t be too fun to watch if you like offense. Expect to see a couple of sluggish teams tired from travel. I imagine there’s going to be a lot of mistakes and sloppy play. That said, the spread isn’t too bad and the Yellow Jackets shouldn’t have too much trouble covering.
