The Kentucky Wildcats and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off on Saturday in an opening weekend college football battle.
The Kentucky Wildcats are coming off of a disappointing season where they missed going to a bowl game after losing six of their last seven games. Drew Barker is back for UK at QB where he replaced Stephen Towles last season who has since transferred. Kentucky is stocked at running back with Boom Williams and Jojo Kemp and playing behind an offensive line that returns almost everybody, they appear to be in good shape. The Wildcats receivers also all return as Jeff Badet, Dorian Baker, and Garrett Johnson all hope to benefit from what should be an improved offense. Denzil Ware is Kentucky’s only returning starter in their front seven but Courtney Love transfers in from Nebraska. The Wildcats secondary should be led by Chris Westry who was outstanding last year in his freshman season. While Kentucky should be improved, the should probably hold back their optimism until their SEC schedule begins.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles were one of the most improved teams in 2015 and they are hoping to build on that and take it to another level this season. Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens is smashing the school passing record book with each game and that isn’t going to stop until he stops playing. Ito Smith was one of two running backs last season to go over 1000 yards for the Golden Eagles and this year he is the primary ball carrier. D.J. Thompson appears to be Southern Miss’ top receiver but Korey Robertson and Marquise Ricard will also start while the interior of the offensive line also returns. Defensively for Southern Miss leading tackler D’Nerius Antoine is back as are Darian Yancy and Elijah Parker for a formidable linebacker unit. Cornell Armstrong has been a rock in the secondary for Southern Miss. USM has some holes to fill as well as a new coach but they should still be very tough this season.
Kentucky is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games, 1-6 against the spread on grass, and 1-7 against the spread in their last eight games. Southern Miss is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 road games, and 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 games.
Southern Miss is loaded and I expect them to move through UK like a knife through butter and the points here make it even better.
