The Old Dominion Monarchs will travel to Kidd Brewer Stadium to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Old Dominion Monarchs (1-0; 0-0 C-USA) opened up their season with a convincing 54-21 victory over the Hampton Pirates this past Sunday. Old Dominion had little trouble with Hampton as they had a 31-14 lead at halftime and was led by OB David Washington who completed 10 of 18 passes for 187 yards and 4 TD’s. Old Dominion outgained Hampton by a 500-308 margin and won the turnover battle by a 3-1 margin. WR Zach Pascal was Washington’s main target as he reeled in 5 catches for 63 yards and a td while RB Ray Lawry, the 2014 C-USA Freshman of the Year, had 110 yards and a TD on 14 carries. Old Dominion generally runs a fast-paced, no huddle offensive, however, they will need to continue to improve on the offensive end if they want to contend in the C-USA this season as they ranked just 91st in the country in total yards last season (371.3 yds/game) and 98th in scoring offensive (24.3 ppg). Old Dominion has a decent defensive line but are somewhat weak in at the linebacker and secondary positions and although they do have a lot of experience coming back, have to find ways to improve on the defensive end as they allowed their opponents to average 35.8 ppg last season. Leading the way for the Monarchs defense is LB TJ Ricks who led the team with 123 tackles last season and had a strong start to his 2016 season with 9 tackles against Hampton.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (0-1; 0-0 Sun-Belt) almost pulled off another huge week 1 upset however, fell just short after losing to the 9th ranked Tennessee Volunteers 20-13 in OT. Appalachian State outplayed Tennessee throughout the entire game but allowed the Volunteers to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and couldn’t answer Tennessee’s TD in the 1st OT. Appalachian State was outgained by Tennessee by a 319-292 margin however, did win the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was QB Taylor Lamb who completed 15 of 23 passes for 108 yards, TD, INT while also adding rushing TD. RB Marcus Cox was outstanding as he gained 115 yards on 24 carries. Defensively, the Appalachian State returned 9 starters from a defensive that ranked 14th in the country and scoring defense (19.1 ppg) and 11th in total yards allowed (314.4 yds/game) in 2015 and the Mountaineers defense looks like that will be a force to reckon with again this season. Appalachian State is led by an outstanding LB duo of Eric Boogs and Kennan Gilchrist. Boggs led the Appalachian State defense with 12 tackles against Tennessee and DL Caleb Fuller also had a solid game creating with 4 tackles (2 tackles for loss) and a sack.
The Monarchs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Mountaineers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Old Dominion should have a solid offense this season with David Washington and Ray Lawry leading the way however, the Monarchs are nowhere near in the same class as the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Although this line is going to be a lot higher now due to their performance against Tennessee, Appalachian State was able to easily defeat Old Dominion on the road last season by a 49-0 margin and I expect to see much of the same result this upcoming Saturday. Take Appalachian State to cover this large spread.
