Coming up on Saturday, September 10, we’ve got a great Week 2 college football matchup coming between the North Carolina State Wolfpack and the East Carolina Pirates from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville.
The Wolfpack is coming off a convincing 48-14 victory over William & Mary in Week 1, thanks to an epic ground game. Jaylen Samuels and Matt Dayes were all over the place here, combining to score five touchdowns and cruise through the afternoon. After a preseason competition with Jalan McClendon for the starting QB job, Ryan Finley won out and played well here, logging 17-of-21 passes for 174 yards and a pair of TDs for the Wolfpack. Finley really didn’t have to do much but complete some easy throws, however, and let his running game do most of the heavy lifting. William & Mary opened the game with a long touchdown drive but hit the wall after that, gaining just 168 total yards.

Meanwhile, East Carolina had a relatively easy Week 1 as well, securing a 52-7 victory over Western Carolina. ECU would score all their points in the first three quarters and cruise from there. Philip Nelson was the star here in his Pirates debut, tossing for five touchdowns and running for another. Nelson would compile 398 yards on the afternoon, with the lion’s share going to Zay Jones, who caught 10 passes for 180 yards and a score. Anthony Scott handled the ground work in the opener, bagging 120 yards rushing. Scott’s total was part of a 275-yard afternoon for the Pirates on the ground.
The Wolfpack are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games in September, and 8-1 ATS in their last nine non-conference games. NC State is also 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games, and 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
As for the Pirates, they’re 4-0 ATS in their last four non-conference games, and 6-0 ATS in their last six against the ACC. East Carolina is also 8-2 ATS in their last 10 September games, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.
Normally I would look at this game as a relatively simple NC State victory, but after East Carolina’s big win and sharp play in Week 1, I like the Pirates to cover here. It should be an exciting game regardless.
