The California Golden Bears will travel to the Qualcomm Stadium to take on the San Diego State Aztecs this Saturday night in College Football action.
The California Golden Bears kicked off the entire 2016 College Football season with a convincing 51-31 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Australia. California got a big game from Texas Tech transfer David Web and had no problem securing the victory after taking a 34-14 halftime lead. The Golden Bears outgained the Rainbow Warriors by a 630-482 margin and forced Hawaii into committing 5 turnovers in the victory. QB David Webb finished the game completing 38 of 54 passes for 4 TD and also chipped in with a rushing TD. Khalfani Muhammad opened the scoring with a 34-yard TD run and finished the game with 96 yards and a TD on 10 carries. WR Chad Hansen had a monster game reeling in 14 catches for 160 yards and 2 TD. WR Melquise Stovall (4 rec, 61 yds, 1 TD) and Jordan Veasy (3 rec, 47 catches, 1 TD) also had solid games for the Golden Bears. California’s offense and Hawaii’s turnovers helped overshadow a below average effort on the defensive end as the Golden Bears did allow the Rainbow Warriors to gain 248 rushing yards. Leading the way defensively for the Golden Bears was DB Khari Vandervilt who recorded 7 tackles. California ranked 108th in the country last season total yards (453.7 yds/game) and as they lost key players at the LB and DB positions, it looks as if it’s going to be another long season for the Golden Bears defense.

The San Diego State Aztecs kicked off their 2016 season much like they ended their 2015 season with a dominating 38-0 victory over the FCS New Hampshire Wildcats. San Diego State had little trouble with New Hampshire as they outgained the Wildcats by a 461-141 margin and held the Wildcats to just 8 first downs. Offensively, San Diego State was led by WR Mikah Holder who had an 86-yard TD catch to open up the scoring and finished the game with 4 receptions, 160 yards, and 2 TD’s. QB Christian Chapman completed 16 of 25 passes for 288 yards and 2 TD’s. Returning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year RB Donnel Pumphrey finished the game with 98 yards and a TD on 21 carries. Defensively, San Diego State returned 7 starters from a 2015 team that ranked 7th in the country in scoring defense (16.4 ppg), 5th in total yards per game (287.3 yds/game), and 1st in TO margin at +22. The Aztecs defense looked as tough as ever as they didn’t allow the Wildcats to convert a 3rd down (0-14) and held the Wildcats to just 71 total rushing yards on an average of just 2.3 yards per carry. Leading the way for the San Diego defense was LB Calvin Munson (11 tackles), and DL Alex Barrett (5 tackles, 2 sacks).
The Golden Bears are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in September and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Aztecs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing their previous game and 4-0-2 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points.
California has to be thrilled that their offensive looks similar to 2015’s version after having to replace QB Jared Goff and their top six receivers. The Golden Bears look like they’ll once again be able to put up many points with David Webb’s and their spread offense. San Diego State was a perfect 9-0 in Mountain West play last season and with basically all their main pieces returning on both sides of the ball, this is a team that could easily go undefeated this season. California will probably be a popular pick this week as many people probably don’t realize how good this San Diego State team, however, as I think the Aztecs will do a decent job in slowing down the Golden Bears offense while being able to score at will against California’s defense, I think San Diego State gets a double-digit victory at home in this one.
