The Massachusetts Minutemen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs face off at Gillette Stadium on Saturday in week 4 college football action.

The UMass Minutemen are off to a 1-2 start to the season after scheduling tough and beating FIU in week 3. The UMass offense is averaging 11.7 points and 234.3 yards per game and  they have turned the ball over 4 times. Minutemen QB Ross Comis is banged up but he has completed 44 percent of his passes for 286 yards with a touchdown and an interception and Andrew Ford has completed 66.7 percent of his passes with 3 touchdowns and an interception. Marquis Young leads the UMass rushing attack with 171 yards and Adam Breneman is the top receiver with 15 catches and 2 touchdowns and Andy Isabella has 12 catches and a touchdown. Tedrick Lowery is the Minutemen’s top tackler with 20, Steve Casali has 19 tackles, and Khary Baily-Smith has 19 tackles. UMass has allowed far too much pressure on their QB as they have been sacked 14 times.

Massachusetts vs. Mississippi State - 9/24/16 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are 1-2 this season as their comeback came up short against LSU last week. The Mississippi State offense is averaging 22.3 points and 379 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 2 times. MSU QB Nick Fitzgerald has completed 55.4 percent of his passes with 2 touchdowns and an interception and he has rushed for 219 yards. Brandon Holloway is the Bulldogs top running back with 111 yards and a touchdown and Fred Ross is the top receiver with 17 catches. The MSU defense is allowing 19.3 points and 338 yards per game with 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries, and 7 sacks. J.T. Gray is Mississippi State’s top tackler with 24, Leo Lewis has 23, and Richie Brown has 22. Mississippi State has played a tough schedule and now they play a softer team but on the road.

UMass is 3-8 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 1-5 against the spread in their last 6 home games, and 0-5 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Mississippi State is 8-2 against the spread following a loss, 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games, and 1-8 against the spread on the road against a team with a losing home record.

This just seems like a lot of points as UMass has played some tough teams already so they won’t see much new here so while I like MSU to win, I’ll take the points with UMass for the cover.
