The San Jose State Spartans will travel to University Stadium (NM) to take on the New Mexico Lobos this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.

The San Jose State Spartans fell to 1-3 (0-0 MW) on the season after being defeated by the Iowa State Cyclones, 44-10, this past Saturday. San Jose State struggled with turnovers and couldn’t make a 2nd half charge after finding themselves down by a 23-3 margin at halftime. San Jose State was outgained by Iowa State by a 503-332 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 4-1 margin. Leading the way for San Jose State was RB Zamore Zigler who had 104 rushing yards on 24 carries. On the season, San Jose State is averaging 25.8 ppg on 391.5 total yards per game (217.8 passing, 173.8 rushing). Offensively, the Spartans have been led by QB Kenny Potter who has completed 60.6% of his passes for 5 TD and 2 INT while averaging 177.3 yds/game. Potter missed the recent Iowa State game with a leg injury but should be back in the lineup this Saturday. Leading the way for the Spartans backfield has been RB Deontae Cooper (15.5 att/game, 69.5 yds/game, TD), RB Zamore Zigler (10.25 att/game, 55.0 yds/game, 2 TD), and QB Kenny Potter (11.33 att/game, 22.67 yds/game, 2 TD). Tre Harley (3.0 rec/game, 59.5 yds/game, TD), Justin Holmes (2.3 rec/game, 49.3 yds/game, TD), and Tim Crawley (3.5 rec/game, 32.8 yds/game, TD) have been the biggest threats at the WR position for the Spartans. Defensively, San Jose State is allowing their opponents to average 39.5 ppg on 482.3 total yards per game (258.5 passing, 223.8 rushing).

New Mexico vs. San Jose State - 10/1/16 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The New Mexico Lobos dropped their 2nd straight game and fell to 1-2 (0-0 MW) on the season after being defeated by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 37-28, this past Saturday. New Mexico jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead over Rutgers however fell behind by a 28-21 margin at halftime and couldn’t generate enough offense in the 2nd half to get the victory. New Mexico outgained Rutgers by a 462-350 margin however, lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for New Mexico was QB Lamar Jordan who completed 8 of 11 passes for 84 yards while adding a TD and 101 yards on the ground. On the season, New Mexico is averaging 35.7 ppg on 471.0 total yards per game (157.0 passing, 314.0 rushing). Offensively, New Mexico has been led by RB Teriyon Gipson who is averaging 121.5 rushing yds/game and has 4 TD’s on the season. RB Richard McQuarley has also been solid in the Lobo’s backfield has he also has 4 TD’s on the season. New Mexico has used both QB Austin Apodaca (55.8 Comp %, 372 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT) and Lamar Jordan (72.7 Comp %, 84 passing; 119 rushing yds, TD). WR Matt Quarells (2.3 rec/game, 40.3 yds/game, TD) and Patrick Reed (2.3 rec/game, 39.7 yds/game, TD) lead the way for the Lobos WR’s. Defensively, New Mexico is allowing their opponents to average 30.0 ppg on 326.7 total yards per game (172.7 passing, 154.0 rushing).

The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in October. The Lobos are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games however, 0-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.

San Jose State has gotten off to a tough start to the season and although they should have QB Kenny Potter back in the lineup, the Spartans need to have their experienced defense play better. New Mexico is also an experienced team that can put up points with a strong rushing attack, however, we’ll have to keep an eye out to ensure that RB Teriyon Gipson is going to play as he missed last game due to a concussion and could face some discipline due to some off-field matters from early 2016. New Mexico comes into this game as the favorite but I think San Jose State is better than what they’ve showed us so far and as long as Kenny Potter is back in the line-up, I think the Spartans play the Lobos tough and cover with the points.
