UCF vs. Tulane - 10/7/16 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Tulane Green Wave won their 2nd straight game and improved to 3-2 (0-1 AAC) on the season after defeating the UMass Minutemen, 31-24, this past Saturday. Tulane used a big 2nd half in which they outscored UMass by a 21-7 margin to secure the comeback victory. Tulane outgained the Minutemen by a 448-312 margin and won the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for the Green Wave was WR Terren Encalade who had a TD and 125 receiving yards on 7 receptions. On the season, Tulane is averaging 31.0 ppg on 349.8 total yards per game (103.2 passing, 246.6 rushing). Offensively, Tulane is a run-first team that ranks 19th in the country in rushing offense. The Green Wave rushing attack is led by RB Dontrell Hilliard (14.2 att/g, 76.8 yds/g, 5 TD), RB Josh Rounds (9.8 att/g, 53.2 yds/g, 4 TD), QB Johnathan Brantley (8.0 att/g, 39.0 yds/g), and RB Lazedrick Thompson (6.2 att/g, 30.6 yds/g, 3 TD). QB’s Glen Cuiellettte and Johnathan Brantley have combined to complete 46.6% of their passes for 5 TD and 2 INT while averaging 103.2 passing yds/game. Terren Encalade is Tulane’s biggest threat at WR as he has 4 TD’s on the season and averages 50.4 yards per game on 3.8 receptions per game. Defensively, Tulane is holding their opponents to an average of 22.4 ppg on 309.0 total yards per game (171.4 passing, 137.6 rushing). Tulane has done a great job in forcing turnovers and has an impressive turnover margin of plus 8 on the season.

The UCF Knights won their 2nd straight road game and improved to 3-2 (1-0 AAC) on the season after defeating the East Carolina Pirates, 47-29, this past Saturday. UCF scored the first 17 points of the 4th quarter to blow this one open and secure the victory. UCF was outgained by East Carolina by a 521-373 margin and won the turnover battle by a 5-2 margin. Leading the way for UCF was RB Dontravious Wilson who had 2 TD and 74 rushing yards on 11 carries. On the season, UCF is averaging 35.2 ppg on 425.2 total yards per game (192.4 passing, 232.8 rushing). UCF has adapted a fast-paced offense under 1st year head coach, Scott Frost, and is led by their rushing attack which ranks 25th in the country. Leading the Knights rushing attack has been RB Dontravious Wilson (12.2 att/g, 55.8 yds/g, 7 TD), RB Adrian Killins (4.4 att/g, 50.8 yds/g, 2 TD), and RB Jawon Hamilton (11.8 att/g, 45.4 yds/g, TD). UCF has used both QB McKenzie Milton (58.0 comp %, 3 TD, INT, 216.5 passing yds/g) and QB Justin Holman (41.2 comp %, 2 TD, 2 INT, 122.7 passing yds/g) and although McKenzie Milton has looked more impressive, UCF did go with Jawon Hamilton in their recent win. UCF’s biggest threats at the receiver positions have been WR Tre’Quan Smith (3.2 rec/g, 44.2 yds/g, 2 TD) and TE Jordan Akins (1.6 rec/g, 37.0 yds/g, TD). Defensively, UCF is holding their opponents to an average of 24.8 ppg on 350.6 total yards per game (238.0 passing, 112.6 rushing). UCF has had a bit of trouble protecting the football as they’ve committed 10 turnovers on the season and have an overall turnover margin of -1.

The Green Wave are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win. The Knights are 4-1 ATS in their 5 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Friday games.

Both Tulane and UCF have already exceeded expectations for their 2016 seasons as  many expects didn’t predict that either of these teams would have three wins in the entire season as along three wins in each of their first five games.  Both teams rely on a solid rushing attack to generate their offense however, UCF certainly has more of an ability to beat you with the pass as Tulane ranks 2nd to last in all of College Football when it comes to passing offense. Both teams are headed in the right direction under their respected head coaches, however, UCF is the better team in this matchup and as Tulane was barley pull out a victory on the road against a terrible UMass team, I just don’t see them being able to cover with the points in this road matchup. I’m taking the UCF Knights to cover this near two TD spread at home!
