Over at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, the Syracuse Orange and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be clashing in college football action on Saturday, October 8.

The Orange enter this game with a 2-3 record, coming off of a 50-33 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame. During that game, we had a tight one at halftime (33-27), but Syracuse could muster just six points in the second half while allowing 17 to the Irish. Orange QB Eric Dungey had a great statistical game, pouring in a 31-of-51 line for 363 yards and two touchdowns through the air, alongside a team-high 17 carries, 49 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Amba Etta-Tawo led Syracuse in receiving with seven grabs for 134 yards and one touchdown.

USA TODAY Sports

On the season so far for the Orange, Dungey has produced a 148-for-230 mark for 1730 yards, 11 TDs and three picks. Dontae Strickland leads Syracuse on the ground with 73 carries and 269 yards, while Etta-Tawo has caught 47 balls already for 840 yards and six touchdowns.

Now let’s check out the Demon Deacons, who enter this game at 4-1 on the year. The Demon Deacons suffered their first and only loss last Saturday to North Carolina State 33-16, thanks mostly to a 23-9 deficit in the first half and jus seven points gathered across the rest of the game—it was bad defense and bad offense all around. Demon Deacons QB John Wolford would finish at 25-of-41 for 263 yards and one touchdown, while RB Matt Colburn led a limp rushing attack with 10 carries for just 39 yards. Tabari Hines was the only real standout for Wake Forest statistically, with nine grabs for 125 yards and one TD.

So far on the Deacons’ season, Wolford has put up 686 yards with three touchdowns and one pick, while Colburn holds 82 carries for 337 yards and one score. Hines leads the Wake Forest receivers with 17 receptions for 226 yards, but has only scored once as well.

The Orange are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games versus a team with a winning home record, and 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up loss. Syracuse is also 4-1 ATS in the last five games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game, and 13-4 ATS in their last 17 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.

Meanwhile, Wake Forest is 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss, and 1-4 ATS in their last five home games. Wake Forest is also 1-4 ATS versus a team with a losing record, and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a straight-up loss.

When they're clicking, Syracuse’s offense is a sight to behold, and if the Orange were a little better on the other side we’d be looking at a phenomenal team. There’s a blueprint to beating Wake Forest now, and it’s to jump out to an early lead and force them to rely solely on the pass, which is something of a weakness for them. The Orange are built to do precisely that, and I expect them to win handily here. It should be a great game to watch if you love pass-heavy, high-flying, high-scoring football—and who doesn’t?
