Coming up on Thursday, October 27 from Heinz Field, the Virginia Tech Hokies will be taking on the Pittsburgh Panthers in ACC Week 9 college football action.

The Hokies come into this game with a solid 5-2 record this year, and are fresh off a 37-16 win over Miami last week. In that one, Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans went 21-of-33 for 259 yards and two touchdowns, while Trevon McMillian logged 18 carries for 131 yards. Sam Rogers led the way for the Hokies in receiving with two catches for 72 yards.

So far this year, Evans is 117-of-186 for 1611 yards and 19 touchdowns, while McMillian leads Virginia Tech in rushing with 92 carries for 458 yards and three scores. Isaiah Ford is tops in receiving for the Hokies so far with 36 receptions for 505 yards and five touchdowns.

As for the Panthers, they’re sporting a 5-2 record this year and have won three in a row following a 45-31 win over Virginia in their last outing. During that game, Pittsburgh was outscored 21-14 in the first quarter but allowed just three points in the second half. Panthers QB Nathan Peterman went 11-of-21 in that game with 137 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while James Conner controlled the ground game with 90 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Jester Weah was the leading receiver for Pittsburgh as usual with 54 yards and a TD on two catches.

On the season, Peterman is 100-of-158 for 1252 yards and 11 touchdowns, and Conner is tops in the running game with 124 carries and 531 yards alongside seven touchdowns for Pittsburgh. Weah leads the Panthers with 19 receptions for 402 yards and four scores so far this year.

The Hokies are 4-0 ATS in their last four games on grass, and 4-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record. Virginia Tech is also 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall, and 6-2 ATS in their last eight conference games.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine games following a bye week, and 5-17 ATS in their last 22 home games. Pittsburgh is also 1-4 ATS in their last five games in October, and 1-4 ATS versus a team with a winning record.

Virginia Tech hasn’t had any trouble putting up points this year, with at least 34 scored in five of their seven games. The Hokies have also been pretty solid on defense as well with 17 points or fewer allowed in five of their seven games. As for Pittsburgh, they’re winning but also giving up a lot of points, with at least 27 points allowed in their last six games. Given those two parallels, I’ll take Virginia Tech here.
