The Tulane Green Wave dropped to 3-4 (0-3 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 50-27, this past Saturday. Tulane had no answers for the high-powered Tulsa offense and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 31-7 margin at halftime. Tulane was outgained by Tulsa by a 566-392 margin and committed 9 penalties in the loss. Leading the way for the Green Wave was RB Josh Rounds who had 166 rushing yards and a TD on 15 carries. On the season, Tulane is averaging 28.0 ppg on 350.6 total yards per game (99.6 passing, 251.0 rushing). Offensviely, the Green Wave have the 16th ranked rushing offense in the country led by RB Dontrell Hilliard (13.0 att/g, 75.6 yds/g, 7 TD), RB Josh Rounds (10.1 att/g, 66.4 yds/g, 5 TD), and RB Lazedrick Thompson (6.6 att/g, 41.1 yds/g, 4 TD). QB Glen Cuiellette has completed 41% of his passes for 6 TD and 3 INT while averaging 93.3 passing yards per game. Terren Encalade (3.3 rec/g, 43.1 yds/g, 4 TD) and Darnell Mooney (1.6 rec/g, 20.0 yds/g, TD) are the leading receivers for the Green Wave. Defensively, Tulane is allowing their opponents to average 26.6 ppg on 358.6 total yards per game (189.9 passing, 168.7 rushing). Tulane has forced 17 turnovers on the season and has an overall turnover margin of +9.
The Mustangs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing home record however are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points. The Green Wave are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 9-3 ATS in their last 5 games in October.
SMU will enter this game with a lot of confidence after knocking off Houston at home, however, the Mustangs will need to continue to get the same defensive effort they displayed against the Cougars as the Mustangs come into this matchup with the 83rd ranked scoring defense and 91st ranked total defense. Tulane has done a great job forcing turnovers this season and although they are very one-dimensional on offense, do have the 34th ranked total defense. I imagine a lot of people will be jumping on SMU this week after last week’s performance, however as SMU is just 1-3 on the road this season while giving up an average of 37.3 ppg on the road, I think Tulane will be to do enough on the offensive end to cover this small home spread. Take Tulane to cover.
