The East Carolina Pirates lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 3-8 (1-6 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the Navy Midshipmen, 66-31, this past Saturday. Navy was down by a 17-7 margin early however, reeled off 38 unanswered points to take a commanding 45-17 lead early in the 3rd quarter in the victory. East Carolina was outgained by Navy by a 593-414 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin. Leading the way for the Pirates was WR Zay Jones who had 212 yards and 2 TD’s on 12 receptions. On the season, East Carolina is averaging 28.5 ppg on 498.1 total yards per game (348.5 passing, 140.6 rushing). Offensviely, the Pirates have been led by WR Zay Jones is the leading receiver in the nation when it comes to rec/g and yds/g. Jones has been dominant this season averaging 13.7 rec/g and 153.2 yds/g while hauling in 8 TD’s. QB Philip Nelson (67.9 Comp %, 16 TD, 8 INT, 262.1 yds/g) has been solid at QB this season however, did miss last game and was replace by Gardner Minshew who completed 16 of 25 passes for 238 yards and 3 TD. The Temple Owls won their 5th straight game and improved to 8-3 (6-1 AAC) on the season after defeating the Tulane Green Wave, 31-0, this past Saturday. Temple defensive once again dominated the competition as the Owls put up their 2nd straight shutout. Temple outgained Tulane by a 533-142 margin and won the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin. Leading the way for the Owls was QB Philip Walker who completed 18 of 33 passes for 337 yards and 2 TD. On the season, Temple is averaging 32.4 ppg on 419.3 total yards per game (233.7 passing, 185.5 rushing). Offensively, Temple has been led by the backfield duo of Ryquell Armstead (12.9 att/g, 80.7 yds/g, 11 TD) and Jahad Thomas (17.4 att/g, 78.2 yds/g, 10 TD). QB Phillip Walker has completed 57.8% of his passes for 18 TD and 12 INT while averaging 231.1 passing yds/game. Ventell Bryant (4.5 rec/g, 82.8 yds/g, 3 TD), Keith Kirkwood (2.7 rec/g, 42.5 yds/g, 3 TD) and Jahad Thomas (3.2 rec/g, 44.4 yds/g, 6 TD) have been the leading receivers for the Owls this season. Defensively, Temple is holding their opponents to an average of 18.5 ppg on 277.8 total yards per game (142.4 passing, 135.5 rushing).
The Pirates are 4-19 ATS in their last 23 conference games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Owls are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games on November.
Both teams come into this matchup with a lot of injury questions as the Pirates have both QB Philip Nelson and RB Anthony Scott listed as questionable while Owls are not sure if RB Ryquell Armstead will be able to give it a go after missing his last game due to an undisclosed injury. East Carolina comes in this game with the 5th ranked passing attack and arguably the best receiver in College Football in Zay Jones, however, Temple comes into this matchup ranked 3rd in College Football in total defense. Temple’s defense might have trouble putting up another shutout, however, even without Ryquell Armstead, I think Temple will be able to put up plenty up points with Phillip Walker and Jahad Thomas leading the way. Temple needs a win to clinch their spot in the AAC Championship and because of this, should give the Owls plenty of motivation to win big and cover this large spread. Take Temple to cover.
