The SMU Mustangs and the Rhode Island Rams face of on Monday in a college basketball battle of two teams who won their season openers.

THE SMU Mustangs play their second game of the 2013-2014 college basketball season after defeating TCU in their opener. SMU led the Horned Frogs by a point at the half and were able to extend it to an eight point win. Nic Moore scored 13 points and had 8 rebounds playing 36 minutes. Ryan Manuel scored 12 points going 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Keith Frazier played 18 minutes but he managed to score 11 points over that time. SMU shot 41.7 percent from the floor, 35.3 percent from beyond the three point arc, and just 59.1 percent from the free throw line. SMU got the win but they will need to improve on their foul shots as well as their steals allowed as TCU had 11 steals against them.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Rhode Island Rams cruised to an easy win over Maine in their season opener and 15 of their players made it onto the floor for the game. URI was up by 17 points at the half and were never uncomfortable.  Ifeyani Onyekaba played just 20 minute but he scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds. Jarelle Reischel played 23 minutes but that was long enough to score 18 points and grab seven rebounds. Hassan Martin scored 13 points in 13 minutes and Xavier Munford scored 11 points. URI outrebounded Maine 54-23 and the racked up seven steals. Rhode Island shot 46.9 percent from the floor, 19 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and just 67.3 percent from the free throw line. This will undoubtedly be a much stiffer test for the Rams.

SMU is 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games and 2-6 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Rhode Island is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games, 1-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 15-31-2 against the spread following a win.

Rhode Island to me looks to be the deeper team and playing against big conference teams is nothing new to them and I wouldn’t be shocked of they got the outright win here though I will take the generous points.
