Two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago face off early Tuesday morning as the St. Mary’s Gaels host the Akron Zips.
The St. Mary’s Gaels have become regulars in the NCAA Tournament and they aren’t known for being a team who just makes it to the dance, they are known for being a team who shakes it up once they get there. While St. Mary’s loses some of their leadership from last season, they still have plenty of returning talent and should be tough once again. In their opening win against Louisiana Tech Brad Waldow poured in 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace STM. Stephen Holt added 18 points an eight rebounds and Beau Levesque had 11 points and six rebounds. St. Mary’s was able to take a four point halftime lead against La. Tech and win by 13 in the end. St. Mary’s shot 52.7 percent from the floor, 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and were 75 percent from the free throw line. The Gaels are once again unranked to enter the season but there is a lot of basketball to be played before March rolls around.
The Akron Zips left the NCAA Tournament last year bruised as while it was nice to make it to the big dance they were crushed by VCU. Akron should be decent once again and they look to be deep as well as several players had big contributions in their win over Coastal Carolina to open the season. Quincy Diggs had 14 points and five rebounds with two assists and two steals to lead Akron. Demetrius Treadwell had 13 points and eight rebounds and Jake Kratzer had 14 points and four rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Nick Harney tossed in 11 points and had five boards. Akron shot 42.4 percent from the floor and 31.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc but they were a miserable 57.7 percent from the free throw line, something they are going to need to improve on if they are going to be able to compete in this spot.
St. Mary’s is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 Tuesday games and 0-3-1 against the spread against the MAC. Akron is 13-5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six games.
I like what Akron has done the past few years but most of their best success has come late in the season and this early this might just be a bad spot.
