The Kent State Golden Flashes hope to stay perfect when they face the Seton Hall Pirates.
Kent State opened the season with Temple who always seems to be tough and appeared to be a good test for one of the MAC favorites. The Golden Flashes proved up to the task with an 81-77 victory despite trailing early on. Offense was the name of the game with the Owls shooting the ball better at over 46% with KSU connecting at 43%. The difference was an 11-22 effort on threes and a +6 at the foul line. Derek Jackson and Devareaux Manley paced the scoring spree with 17 points apiece with the former grabbing six boards with Darren Goodson adding 12 points and six pulls while Kellon Thompson chipped in with eleven points off the bench.
Seton Hall opened 2013-14 with an 83-72 decision over Niagara in a track meet which isn't all that unusual when facing the Purple Eagles who have typically run up and down the floor. The problem is that many of the familiar faces are gone and they didn't have the ammunition to hang with the Pirates. SHU simply shot the ball much better at 48% with Niagara checking in at 37% and just 2-17 from beyond the arc which was another factor. The Pirates did flex some muscle defensively with 16 turnovers but the offense carried the day with all 12 players that saw the floor also scoring. Sterling Gibbs paced the attack with 23 points and six rebounds followed by a 14 point, six pull effort by Brandon Mobley with Patrick Auda chipping in with eleven points and eight boards.
Interesting early season match up with Kent State picked to challenge for the top of the MAC and Seton Hall supposed to be in the middle of the Big East some where. Too early to say which is right but I'll take the points...
