The Loyola Marymount Lions travel to Long Beach State to play the 49ers on Thursday night.
Loyola Marymount is 2-0 on the year after beating South Dakota State 98-89 on Saturday. Anthony Ireland had 20 points and 12 assists, which is his fifth career double-double for the senior guard. Ireland had 14 points and 3 assists in the Lions season opening win. In the win over South Dakota State, sophomore F Ben Dickinson added 22 points and 6 rebounds, while freshman F Gabe Levin added 20 points and 6 rebounds. LMU led SDSU by one point at halftime after three straight three-pointers. The Lions led by as many as 15 in the second half and their shooting percentage of 57.6% was the best in over three years. LMU obviously did not defend well and committed 37 fouls in the game. The Lions will have their hands full on defense again when they face Long Beach State this week. Until LMU decides to play defense their offense will have to keep scoring at a stellar pace, which could be hard on the road.

Long Beach State dropped to 1-1 on the year after losing at Arizona 91-57 on Monday. The 49ers lost to Arizona 94-72 at the McKale Center last season and has just four returning players this season after head coach Don Morson did not welcome back three who were expected to be key contributors this season. So because of all the losses in the off-season this game this game did not setup well for Long Beach State. The 49ers missed 12 of its first 13 shots, three on air balls, and they were down 10 in the first seven minutes of the game. Long Beach State only hit 5 of it’s first 35 shots in the first half, including 1-of-14 from three-point range. The lone bright spot for the 49ers was senior F Dan Jennings who finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds. The 49ers could not slow down the Wildcats as they were able to shoot over 58% from the field and over 40% from three-point range. Long Beach State will have to shack this blowout loss quick, because Loyola Marymount is playing pretty well early on.
These two teams have split the last four meetings while LBSU won last year’s game by 3 points at home. LBSU is in a rebuilding year while LMU has at least three players that have the ability to score in bunches. I think it will be hard for LBSU to bounce back after a blowout loss, even though they will be at home for this game. LMU gets the win and covers on the road to go to 3-0 on the season.
