The Virginia Cavaliers look to get back to winning when they take the floor with the Davidson Wildcats.

If the Cavaliers are going to make noise in the ACC and beyond it will be because their defense is shutting down opponents with decent contributions offensively. That theory worked as planned in defeating James Madison in the opener but so much in a 59-56 loss to Virginia Commonwealth. The Cavs defense was solid with the Rams hitting at 41% but scoring was shaky on just 39% shooting which proves you still have to score in this game. Despite dominating the backboards 40-24 the VCU defense forced 19 giveaways which translated in to 12 more shots. Joe Harris pumped in 18 points and nabbed five pulls with Malcolm Brogdon adding ten poinst while Akil Mitchell and Darion Atkins combined for 17 points with the latter grabbing eight boards.

Davidson has been tagged for another SoCon championship even though some production was lost to graduation. The Wildcats haven't gotten off on the right foot after falling to Milwaukee 81-77 for an 0-2 start. A 34 point defeat top Duke probably opened some eyes but plenty of teams will lose to the Blue Devils so that type of thing is going to happen. Losing to the Panthers did surprise me because the Panthers aren't given any chance in the Horizon. The Wildcats led by seven at the break but the defense struggled to get stops over the final 20 minutes. Both teams hit at around 44% with Milwaukee owning 32-11 edge at the foul line. Brian Sullivan and Tom Droney each poured in 22 points with De'Mon Brooks adding 14 points and ten rebounds while Jack Gibbs chipped in with nine.

Based on what I have seen Virginia is the better team and Davidson doesn't want to start the season in an 0-3 hole. I thinking the Wildcats at least put up a fight and if not they are over rated. I have to say I stunk picking Davidson games a year ago...

Virginia -8
