The South Carolina Gamecocks make the short trip to Death Valley Sunday evening for an in-state battle with the Clemson Tigers.
Frank Martin’s Gamecocks are 1-1 on the season and enter this contest coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Baylor Bears on the road this past week 66-64. The Gamecocks had their fair share of chances to win this contest, but Baylor was able to hold on. After leading at the break, the Gamecocks were outplayed for the first 13 minutes of the second half before Baylor went ice cold. Despite the Bears failing to make a field goal in the final 7 minutes, South Carolina was unable to re-gain control. The Gamecocks were led by Sindarius Thornwell’s 20 points and Brenton WIlliams added 12 off the bench. The Gamecocks scrappy, undersized forwards were dominated by Baylor’s big men -- fortunately for South Carolina, they won’t see many frontcourts that talented the rest of the season.

Clemson sits at 2-0 on the season after two cupcake wins to start the year. The Tigers defense has been very impressive through two games, yielding just 44 ppg to opponents -- it remains to be seen if that is due in part to the lackluster competition or if the Tigers will be an elite defensive team this year. In their last contest, the Tigers beat Delaware State 58-37 behind K.J McDaniels 11, 5 and 3 and Demarcus Harrison’s 15 points in just 20 minutes off the bench. The Tigers controlled a +15 rebounding advantage and were able to easily overcome just 40% shooting from the field and 29% from deep.
Rivalry games are always tough and while the Tigers have looked impressive this season, I am fairly confident playing two of the worst teams in all of D-1 hoops is the reason for it. South Carolina should be angry after their loss to Baylor and not intimidated by the atmosphere at Littlejohn after dealing with Baylor’s rowdy crowd last week. I like the Gamecocks to steal one on the road with the cover.
