The winless Marist Red Foxes face off against the 1-2 Maryland Terrapins in first round action of the Paradise Jam Friday at 4PM on CBS Sports Network.
Marist enters this contest just happy to get away from the mainland after the Red Foxes have been dominated by opponents on their way to an 0-4 start. Marist’s most recent loss came in dominant fashion at the hand of the Providence Friars 93-48. The Friars out-dueled the Red Foxes in all facets of the game - out-rebounding Marist 48-26 and forcing them into 17 turnovers, many of which ended in fast break dunks. The Red Foxes managed to shoot just 17-53 from the floor and did not show much better at the line where they finished 10-20 for the game. Khalid Heart led the way with 21 points but no other Marist player was able to surpass 8 points. The loss was their most lopsided of the season.

Maryland is off to a slower than anticipated start sitting at 1-2. After falling just short against a solid UConn team, the Terps beat a poor Albeline Christian team before falling at home 90-83 to Oregon State in front of the first family. The Terps root of their problems is at the point guard position where Seth Allen is out until late December with a broke foot and Mark Turgeon decided to give the keys to Dez Wells -- a swing player through and through. In the Oregon State game, Turgeon finally gave Roddy Peters significant minutes at the point and the offense began to flow accordingly. Peters finished with 10 points and 6 impressive assists and Wells was able to pour in 23 from his natural position. Unfortunately for Maryland, their defense was atrocious as the Beavers shot 60% from the floor and big man Devon Collier was able to dominate down low with 29 and 11. Maryland will need to get better play out of big man Shaq Cleare this weekend when the Terps hope to get 3 quick wins and get on a roll.
Some trends to consider - Marist is 0-4 against the spread in their last 4 overall and Maryland is 6-1 against the spread in their last 7 neutral site contests.
Despite Maryland’s struggles defensively, the Terps appear to be headed in the right direction having identified their only true PG on the roster and inserting him into the starting lineup. I look for Maryland’s size and the ability of Dez Wells to overpower anyone that Marist throws at him to be the difference maker here as the Terps go up double digits by the half and run away with the cover and advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
