The Marist Red Foxes meet the Morgan State Bears Monday in the Paradise Jam Tournament with both teams looking for their first wins of the season.

Marist has had a turbulent start to the season, losing five straight games by double-digit margins until losing 76-70 to Loyola Marymount Saturday. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 20-7 lead, but let it slip to a 33-32 advantage by the half. Marist used staunch defense to keep Loyola Marymount to just 12 of 29 from the floor in the first half, but the Lions found their groove in the second, shooting 60 percent from the field to pull away for the win. Junior 6-5 G Chavaughn Lewis led the Red Foxes with 19 points on 36 percent from the field and hit 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. Senior 6-5 G Jay Bowie added 16 points and 7 rebounds on 36 percent shooting and hit 6 of 6 from the stripe. As a team, the Red Foxes shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from distance and hit 22 of 28 from the foul line.

Morgan State has also been on the receiving end of more double-digit beatdowns than not this season in its six straight losses. The Bears come in off a 75-66 loss to Vanderbilt in the Paradise Jam Saturday and actually kept it close, pulling within seven points of the Commodores until about the five minute mark of the second half. Morgan State shot just 32 percent in the first half, but picked it up in the second, making 14 of 29. Senior 6-2 G Justin Black led the Bears in scoring with 18 points on 35 percent from the field and added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Senior 7-2 C Ian Chiles had 15 points and 9 rebounds on 58 percent from the field. Morgan State shot 40 percent from the floor, 31 percent from distance and hit 13 of 22 from the line.

The line in this one is currently at -10 for Morgan State and although these teams are both winless, Morgan State’s loss to a good Vanderbilt team is the best of the bunch. Look for the Bears to cover.
