The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Loyola-Marymount Lions face off on Monday at the Paradise Jam in college basketball action.
The Vanderbilt Commodores are off to a 3-2 start and while they have talent on the roaster, they still have some work to do to beat the better teams. Kevin Stallings’ team has dropped games to Butler and Providence and while those are good teams, they didn’t cover the spread in either game. Eric McClellan is averaging 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists to lead Vandy. Rod Odom averages 15.2 points and 4.2 rebounds, Kyle Fuller averages 10.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists, and Damian Jones is averaging 10.2 points. Vanderbilt is averaging 73.4 points per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, 38.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and just 56.5 percent from the free throw line while defensively they are allowing 73.4 points and their opponents are shooting 42.9 percent.

The Loyola Marymount Lions are off to a 5-1 start and like many f their teams in the past they are explosive on offense and can’t stop anyone on defense. On the surface the Lions record is impressive but they have played the 344th ranked schedule in the nation thus far. Anthony Ireland leads LMU averaging 19.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. Gabe Levin is averaging 13.2 points and 8.8 rebounds, Evan Payne is averaging 13 points, and Ben Dickinson is averaging 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds. Loyola Marymount is averaging 82.8 points per game and they are shooting 47.7 percent from the floor, 29.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 76 percent from the free throw line while defensively they are allowing 79.2 points and their opponents shoot 45.9 percent.
Vanderbilt is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven neutral site games, 8-3 against the spread against a team with a winning percentage greater than .600, and 22-7-1 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread. Loyola Marymount is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games, 6-1 against the spread following a win, and 5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
When you give a Head Coach like Kevin Stallings too much to work with by not playing strong defense it usually will come back to bit you hard and I expect that is what happens to LMU here though I expect them to put up plenty of points as well.
