The Eastern Michigan Eagles welcome the #24 Massachusetts Minutemen to Convocation Center.
It should come as no surprise that Massachusetts has been lighting up the scoreboard because putting the ball in the basket has been their specialty for awhile. The question has been can this team survive in close, low scoring affairs and so far the answer is yes after UMass dumped Clemson 62-56 in the Charleston Classic championship. A ten point lead heading in to the locker room was enough of a cushion despite 39.7% shooting because the Tigers logged a 35.6% mark which resulted in a few more Minutemen baskets. Cady Lalanne was the offensive star with a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds while Derrik Gordon tossed in ten points and grabbed five boards.

In the past Eastern Michigan has been a team that likes to slow the game down and run a controlled half court attack but to kick off 2013-14 the Eagles have the complete opposite with an average of over 76 points. The defense has been just as impressive with 64 points allowed and whether the #176 strength of schedule has anything to do with their 5-1 start remains to be seen. The lone loss came last time out in a 81-63 loss to Kentucky which was just a three point deficit at the half before the Wildcats came to life over the final 20 minutes. EMU struggled to 36% from the floor with UK owning a +19 on the glass and a 28-11 margin at the line to off set 43% shooting. Darell Combs pumped in a game best 23 points with Karrington Ward and Ray Lee combining for 17 points.
This could be a dangerous spot for UMass if they don't hit shots because Eastern Michigan has suddenly found some scoring punch. I'll side with the Minutemen and hope they don't take this lightly...
