The Northern Iowa Panthers and the VCU Rams face off on Saturday in a college basketball matchup.
The Northern Iowa Panthers are 4-5 on the season but they haven’t taken it easy on themselves playing the 65th ranked schedule in the nation. UNI looks to have their work cut out for them this season as the MVC appears to be a tough conference especially at the top. Deon Mitchell is averaging 13.8 points and he leads the Panthers. Seth Tuttle is averaging 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds, Nate Buss us averaging 11 points and 5.1 rebounds, and Chip Rank is averaging 9.7 points. Northern Iowa is averaging 72.2 points and they are shooting 43.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 70.9 points and their opponents are shooting 43.1 percent. UNI begins Missouri Valley play on New Year’s Day.

The VCU Rams are 8-2 this season and they have won their last four games in a row. Virginia Commonwealth has played the 51st ranked schedule and they are 2-0 in road games. Treveon Graham is averaging 16 points and 6.8 rebounds, to lead the Rams. Juvonte Reddic is averaging 13.1 points and 7.5 rebounds, Bob Brandenberg is averaging 10.3 points, and Melvin Johnson is averaging 10.2 points. VCU is averaging 76.7 points and they are shooting 43.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 67.1 points and their opponents are shooting 45.3 percent. VCU started the season ranked and they end up ranked again before it is all said and done.
Northern Iowa is 4-1 against the spread against the A-10, 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 non-conference games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games. VCU is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, 5-1 against the spread against the MVC, and 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 road games.
VCU appears to have the edge on both ends of the court so while on the surface it looks like it could be competitive VCU is much the best here.
