The 5-4 LaSalle Explorers face off against the 10th ranked, undefeated Villanova Wildcats in downtown Philly hoops action from the Pavillion Sunday at 2:30PM on Fox Sports 1.
LaSalle comes into this annual contest winners of two straight after dominating the 2nd half to make fairly easy work of Stony Brook this past week 65-57. The Explorers were down 9 at the half but came out of the gate quick after intermission behind the hot shooting hand of Jerrell Wright. Wright poured in 21 points and added 5 boards and was aided by streaky scorer Tyrone Garland’s 12 points off the bench. LaSalle played mistake free basketball in the second half and finished with just 9 turnovers for the game.
Villanova has gotten off to an amazing start this season as they sit at 10-0 and have risen to #10 in the rankings. The Wildcats feature one of the best rebounding frontcourts in the nation and their force down low was on display in their most recent win -- a 98-68 waxing of usually competitive St. Joseph’s. James bell dominated the Hawks all game long finishing with 25 points and 14 rebounds. JayVaughn Pinkston added 27 and 8 and Villanova managed to turn the ball over just 5 times for the game. The Wildcats were 12-30 from deep and shot nearly 80% from the free throw line -- an area they continue to excel at early this season. The Wildcats will look to claim city bragging rights if they can take down the Explorers Sunday.
Some trends to consider -- LaSalle is 6-1-1 against the spread in their last 8 Sunday games and Villanova is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 overall.
LaSalle were the talk of the town last season with their strong tourney run but the Wildcats have been the superior team thus far this year and their experiences starting five and froncourt strength will be the difference in this one. I expect a big game from Bell and Pinkston once again and look for Arcidacono to get his hot shooting hand back as the Wildcats cruise to the cover.
